The goal of the Global Program in Pediatric Respiratory Sciences is to advance the respiratory health of children in low-income and middle-income countries. Our work spans sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, Central America and South America, with a primary focus on the countries of South Africa, Malawi and Bangladesh. We also work in Lesotho, Nigeria, India, Peru, Guatemala and Rwanda.

Clinical Education Activities

Our clinical education activities are currently focused on the respiratory management of people infected with SARS-CoV-2 across the country of Lesotho. Our research is concentrated on the epidemiology, prevention and treatment of pediatric respiratory diseases, recently including studying infant lung development and respiratory diagnostics in Bangladesh and non-invasive ventilation in Malawi.

The Global Program has supervised multiple pediatric residents and medical students in Malawi, in collaboration with University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, during tropical medicine rotations and NIH-funded research fellowships at Kamuzu Central Hospital in the capital city of Lilongwe. We also advise Ph.D. students at the Projahnmo Research Foundation in Bangladesh, in collaboration with the University of Edinburgh’s RESPIRE program.
