Johns Hopkins Children's Center is committed to providing the highest standards of care to patients and families. Our Pediatric Palliative Care Team strives to achieve the best possible quality of life for the child and family. When death is inevitable, we support the child and family through the dying process and in bereavement.

In our constant effort to provide the best care possible to our patients and families, we work closely with these groups both within and outside the walls of Johns Hopkins Children’s Center.

  • Pediatrics at Home
    Part of the Hopkins family, Pediatrics at Home provides 24/7 skilled nursing services, equipment and care coordination, and consultation with an interdisciplinary team of professionals who provide care to children and families in their homes.
  • Johns Hopkins Pediatric Pain Team
    The Pediatric Pain Management Service (PPS) offers expertise in the management of both acute and chronic pain.
  • Gilchrist Kids Pediatric Hospice
    Gilchrist Kids’ goal is to promote a nurturing environment for children with life-threatening illnesses or injuries by offering the emotional, physical and spiritual care they need and by helping families cope with their grief.

Holding Space: Palliative Care in the NICU at Johns Hopkins Children's Center

The expectation and arrival of a new baby is supposed to be a joyful time in a family’s life, but many parents are left reeling when they receive the heartbreaking news that their baby likely won’t live long. Four families share their experiences of loss in Johns Hopkins Children's Center's NICU, and staff speak about the services available through Johns Hopkins’ Perinatal Palliative Care Program to support parents facing the unimaginable: the death of their baby.
