Harriet Lane Clinic

For nearly a century now, the name Harriet Lane has been synonymous with Johns Hopkins and revolutionary pediatric medicine, research and training. The first hospital in the nation devoted to children, the Harriet Lane Home for Invalid Children helped pioneer the practice of caring for patients in specialty clinics.

Hopkins Children’s Center has provided primary health care services to the community in East Baltimore for almost a century, first as the Harriet Lane Home and currently as the Harriet Lane Clinic located within the David M. Rubenstein Child Health Building.The mission of today’s Harriet Lane Clinic is to improve the health and quality of life of children and adolescents within their families and communities and to educate trainees in this model of care.

With about 18,000 visits each year, the clinic serves as a training site for medical students, pediatric residents and fellows, who provide comprehensive health care services for approximately 8,500 children and youth up to 21 years of age. These services include:

  • General and preventive health care (annual checkups and immunizations)
  • Acute illness care
  • Adolescent specialty services, including family planning
  • Dental services
  • Child life services and programs
  • Social work services
  • Mental health care for children, adolescents and caregivers
  • Nutrition and breastfeeding support services
  • Parenting information and support
  • Assessment and treatment of behavior and development problems
  • Links to school and community programs
  • Referrals and collaboration with pediatric specialists

The clinic is led by a multidisciplinary team and is guided by a community advisory board. The Harriet Lane Clinic offers many unique programs, including:

  • Youth Fitness Circle for overweight children and adolescents (nutrition education and exercise classes)
  • Intensive Primary Care (IPC) Clinic for children and adolescents with or affected by HIV
  • Health Leads Family Help Desk connecting families to community-based services and programs
  • Mental health services for Children and Families
  • Considering College Program assisting adolescents in college preparation
  • After-school tutoring
  • Safety Lane injury prevention resource center
  • Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program
  • Reach Out and Read and adolescent literacy programs to promote family literacy
  • Reproductive health services (Title X program)
  • Project HEAL (health, education, advocacy and law) provides the legal advocacy education and services of a full-time lawyer to help families with legal needs.
  • Community outreach and intervention addressing sexually transmitted infection and HIV prevention
