Overview

Tawam Hospital opened in 1979 and is part of the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA) network of public hospitals owned by the Health Authority of Abu Dhabi. The 461-bed tertiary care facility serves as a national referral center for oncology services and as a regional referral center for specialized medical care in areas such as neonatal care, fertility services, emergency medicine, intensive care, oncology services and state-of-the-art cardiac care.

About Our Agreement

Johns Hopkins Medicine International and SEHA signed an initial 10-year management agreement in 2006, which they amended to a management services agreement in 2010 (still ending June 2016) to provide oversight of daily operations, consulting and educational support. Johns Hopkins Medicine International and SEHA then signed a three-year clinical partnership agreement in 2017 that focused on oncology and management services at Tawam Hospital. In accordance with the terms of the agreement, Johns Hopkins:

  • Appointed a chief quality officer/deputy chief medical officer to oversee the hospital’s clinical quality, patient safety and risk management
  • Appointed an oncology medical director (Baltimore based), full-time medical oncologist (Tawam based) and full-time oncology administrator (Tawam based) to provide clinical care and improve operations of the oncology center
  • Developed programs in cancer care services, education, training and operational efficiency
  • Offered surgical rotations and provided knowledge transfer activities to enhance or establish high-quality cancer services 
  • Provided remote medical second opinions
  • Consulted and trained Tawam staff members for Joint Commission International reaccreditation
