Prostate Artery Embolization (PAE) procedure is an interventional radiology outpatient non-surgical procedure that is minimally invasive and aims to improve symptoms related to enlarged prostate, including urinary incontinence or frequent urination. PAE requires less recovery time than surgery, also has a lower risk of side effects, including urinary incontinence and lower sexual side effects (retrograde ejaculation or erectile dysfunction).

What Can I Expect During My Appointment?

An interventional radiologist will do the PAE procedure. A small catheter will be inserted and then guided into the vessels that supply blood to your prostate. Tiny round particles are then injected to reduce blood supply and following this procedure, the prostate will begin to shrink, relieving and improving symptoms usually within days of the procedure.

What are the signs someone might benefit from the PAE procedure?

  • Do you find yourself needing to use the bathroom to urinate frequently?
  • Are you up all night needing to use the bathroom to urinate?
  • Have you been told that your prostate gland is enlarged, causing your worsening need to urinate due to a smaller bladder capacity?

If you or someone you know have answered yes to any or all of those questions, they may be a candidate for the PAE procedure and its benefits. To find out more, call 410-502-6611 and speak directly to the Johns Hopkins Interventional Radiology Center to schedule a consultation.
