Finding Child Care

Licensed Child Care in Maryland: LOCATE by the MD Family Network
LOCATE provides enhanced child care resources and referral services to Maryland-registered family child care providers and licensed group programs, such as full-day centers, preschool and Head Start programs, public pre-K programs, private kindergartens, school-age programs, summer programs and camps. Licensed Child Care Outside of Maryland: mySupport
mySupport can help with a variety of issues, including finding child care or eldercare. Contact mySupport to receive resources for help finding a licensed caregiver in states outside of Maryland. You can reach mySupport 24/7, 365 days a year, by phone at 443-997-7000 or online. Cooperative Child Care: Komae
Komae is a cooperative childcare app that provides a flexible child care management option. Komae enables parents to identify and vet families with similar parenting styles and COVID-19 protocol practice to build their pod for shared childcare and education. Additional information can be found in this User Guide. To get started, download the Komae app to your phone, create your account, and join the Hopkins group, or create your own.

Backup Care for Children and Adults

Backup Care by Care@Work*
Full-time, benefits-eligible Hopkins employees, postdocs, and residents receive vetted and subsidized adult or child care when your regular care is unavailable, so you don’t have to take time off of work. Each year, you receive:

  • Ten (10) days of subsidized in-home or in-center backup care for children, or in-home backup care for adults/seniors
  • Care.com backup care specialists to assist in locating pre-screened and qualified caregivers
  • Backup child care, 24/7, for children 17 years old or younger, when school is closed, your child is sick, or you need to work late or on weekends
  • Adult backup care for yourself and adult relatives for companion and personal care services, such as transportation to medical appointments and other hands-on care
  • Pay for caregivers with a flat hourly co-pay based on your salary, according to the tiers below (Care.com will bill your credit card after service delivery)

Lactation Support

Pregnancy, childbirth, adoption, surrogacy, and loss are all major life transitions. Continuing to chest/breastfeed, or exclusively pump, requires extra planning and support. Johns Hopkins’ Lactation Support Program helps make the transition back to work or study easier.

Lactation Rooms
Currently, we have 42 registered lactation rooms scattered across our Maryland campuses. Additional rooms and locations are also available upon request, or for departmental use only. When you register for the program, you can select the rooms you plan to use and will automatically receive a confirmation email with room access and amenity information. Additionally, our Lactation Room page includes information on how to obtain a personal pump through insurance, the hospital-grade pumps available in our registered rooms, which accessory kits are compatible with them, as well as where you can buy those kits and other necessary lactation supplies from vending machines

Employee Resources
Information and resources for how to successfully transition from work to leave, tips for success during leave, as well as returning to work or study after leave. You will also find a comprehensive list of internal Hopkins resources as well as relevant external resources. A list of COVID-19 resources is also available.

Supervisor Resources
As a supervisor, you play an important role in an employee’s successful transition from leave to work. We have compiled a list of resources to help you and your employee reach a mutually beneficial lactation plan upon return to work or study.


Lactation Policy
Johns Hopkins University and Health System have policies in place to provide reasonable break times for employees needing to express milk throughout their work day. State and federal laws are also listed on this page as a resource.

 

School Age and Educational Resources

Varsity Tutors
Conquer the school year with free live online classes, personalized 1-on-1 tutoring, and complete learning-at-home solutions with Varsity Tutors. Johns Hopkins employees receive a 20% discount on expert live instruction for students of all ages. Learn more about the tools and resources available to you here.

Streamline Tutors
Streamline Tutors is a 1-on-1 mentorship group that supports elementary, middle, and high school students. Each student receives a 1-hour cognitive assessment that gives the tutors a deep understanding of your child’s learning strengths, weaknesses, and style, even before their first session. Johns Hopkins employees can take advantage of a $199 discount. Free diagnostics and consultations ($99 value) are always available to the Hopkins community. The additional $100 credit is applied at the start of your child’s curriculum. Upon inquiring, use your Hopkins email address and select Hopkins as your referral source at the bottom of the form. School@Home by the Nanny Network

eLearning Aides
Connecting online using a Zoom format, eLearning Aides know how to make learning fun through a computer screen. They can help keep your children organized with their school work and on task with their daily assignments, all while building smiles and giggles into the process. This service is best for kids ages 5 and up; recommended session times of 1-2 hours (maximum of 4 hours).

Private Educators
In-home care providers who possess a strong teaching background and can provide an advanced level of academic support, structure, and consistency to your child’s school year. Many are current or past teachers, tutors, and/or professional nannies, all with a college degree. They can be hired on a temporary or permanent basis. Temporary Private Educators are available for a minimum of 20 hours per week. Families who are interested, can share a Private Educator or create a learning pod (two family maximum).

Elder Care for Aging Adults
mySupport can help with many of the challenges surrounding caring for an aging adult—whether it’s finding housing, accessing resources for caregivers, or getting answers to legal and other questions. mySupport can also help with the psychological stressors associated with caregiving by offering free, in-person counseling sessions.

Area agency on aging
(AAA) lists local services for seniors such as housing, transportation, nutrition assistance, benefits eligibility, and more. For Maryland residents, Maryland Access Point will direct you to your local AAA office. Although information is available on-line, this service may be best utilized with a phone call -1-844-627-5465.

The Eldercare Locator is a national information and referral service that provides support to individuals across the extent of issues affecting older Americans. Language interpretation services are available to callers.
