Types of gifts
Cash, check, or credit card
Perhaps the best-known way to support the hospital is through cash gifts, including check and credit card payments. Donate online or download our printable donation form. You can double, or even triple, your contribution by finding out if your employer will match your gift.
Pledges provide you an opportunity to make a larger gift than you otherwise thought possible by committing your gift over a period of one to three years. Ideally, your pledge should be documented in writing.
Gifts of appreciated securities: stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and other assets
Appreciated stocks and bonds are also popular assets you can donate to the hospital while enjoying a greater tax benefit than for an equivalent cash donation.
Donating appreciated assets entitles you to a charitable deduction for the fair-market value of the donated asset, while avoiding the capital-gain tax you would otherwise pay upon the sale of the appreciated securities. This tax deduction may be up to 30 percent of your adjusted gross income, and any amount over this limit may be carried forward for five years.
The rules about giving real estate are essentially the same as for gifts of securities. Almost any type of real estate may be donated: undeveloped land, farms, commercial buildings, vacation homes or your residence.
Tangible Personal Property: artwork, collectibles, and other items
As with gifts of long-term capital-gain securities or real estate, you are entitled to a charitable deduction for a gift of long-term capital-gain tangible personal property such as works of art, rare books and stamp or coin collections, etc. (Note: The capital-gain tax rate on such assets is 28 percent.) How much you can deduct depends on the so-called standard of “related use.”
Often, people don't realize that life insurance proceeds are taxable in their estate. Fully paid-up policies can prove very attractive as gifts, particularly when a policy has outlived the purpose for which it was originally purchased.
Closely held business stock
You may realize substantial tax benefits for this type of gift. For business owners and their family members with a substantial portion of their estates linked to their business, a gift of closely held stock can provide planning flexibility and tax minimization.
A matching gift represents a corporation’s philanthropic interest to support the charities to which its employees contribute. It also encourages a spirit of financial and charitable responsibility. Corporations with matching gift programs tend to match monetary donations as well as volunteer hours. The impact of your gift to Howard County General Hospital may be doubled or possibly tripled!
To find out if your company has a matching gift policy, check with your company's human resources or personnel office to see if your employer matches gifts. Ask for the appropriate Matching Gift form, fill it out, and mail it in with your contribution (or a reference to your recent contribution) to:

Honor and Memorial Gifts
Honor and memorial gifts are a thoughtful way to celebrate a special occasion, to recognize your caregivers, or to memorialize a loved one. Honor gifts may be given to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, Mother's Day, Father's Day and Grandparents' Day, or to announce a retirement, birth, graduation or job promotion. You may honor anyone for any reason at any time.Making an honor or memorial gift is a meaningful way to extend condolences and/or congratulations to friends and family members throughout the year. When you give in this manner, we will send a special acknowledgement of your gift to the person being honored or to the family of the person being memorialized.
We also offer a program for donors to recognize the people special to them. Visit our Honor a Caregiver page to learn more.
Entry Plaza Campaign
Howard Hospital Foundations’ Entry Plaza Campaign is an exciting opportunity to etch your name into the history of Howard County General Hospital: A Member of Johns Hopkins Medicine. Through this campaign, you can purchase a special, engraved paving stone that will be part of the hospital's entryway and gardens, welcoming all who come to this vital community institution.
Whether you want to show your support for the hospital, honor a relative or friend, or memorialize someone special, an engraved paving stone is a wonderful way to preserve a lasting legacy.
These elegant pavers will be placed in a special location in the Entry Plaza, making the inscriptions very visible, but protected from the hospital's day-to-day hustle and bustle. A limited number of these special 16"X 8" pavers are available for sale for $1,000, so you can be assured your message will be prominently displayed.
All proceeds from this campaign will go toward the creation of the hospital's Entry Plaza. By participating, you will be improving your community's anchor health care institution while becoming a permanent part of it.
We offer three convenient ways to purchase your paving stone:
