HCGH Receives Awards for Stroke Program
For Immediate Release
June 1, 2018
COLUMBIA, Md.—As the Stroke Program Howard County General Hospital celebrates its tenth anniversary, the hospital is pleased to announce that the program has again received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award with Target: StrokeSM Honor Roll Elite. The awards recognize HCGH’s commitment to providing the most appropriate stroke treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence.
HCGH earned the award by meeting specific quality achievement measures for the diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients at a set level for a designated period. These measures include evaluation of the proper use of medications and other stroke treatments aligned with the most up-to-date, evidence-based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke patients. Before discharge, patients should also receive education on managing their health and get a follow-up visit scheduled, along with other care transition interventions.
To qualify for the Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite, hospitals must meet quality measures developed to reduce the time between the patient’s arrival at the hospital and treatment with the clot-buster tissue plasminogen activator, or tPA, the only drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat ischemic stroke. If given intravenously in the first three hours after the start of stroke symptoms, tPA has been shown to significantly reduce the effects of stroke and lessen the chance of permanent disability.
“HCGH is proud to have received this important designation from the American Hospital Association every year since our program began. It recognizes that the hospital remains committed to a high standard of stroke care by ensuring that patients receive treatment according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations,” said Eric Aldrich, M.D., Ph.D., medical director, HCGH Stroke Center. “As part of the Johns Hopkins Stroke Network, HCGH is able to provide patients with rapid access to emergent advanced stroke care at Comprehensive Stroke Centers. This ensures specialized care for patients with even the most challenging strokes throughout the course of their diagnosis, treatment and recovery. HCGH also provides outpatient rehabilitation therapy and a stroke support group.”
