Commitment to Quality

Our work culture values, above all, providing our patients with the best care possible.

Understanding Quality

More and more, consumers are researching hospitals and physicians before they decide where to seek care. However, it can be a confusing process. Health care quality can be judged in a variety of ways. You can research the experience of physicians—their training, certifications and years in a specialized field of medicine.

When evaluating hospitals, you can look at mortality (death) rates, patient satisfaction scores and other measures. You can also seek information from regulatory agencies and nonprofit groups that have developed their own indicators for judging hospital performance.

Johns Hopkins Medicine's Patient Safety and Quality website is a user-friendly resource that helps consumers understand and compare quality and safety data across the institution's five inpatient adult hospitals, including Howard County General Hospital, and its home health care group.

Recognition and Awards

Cardiac Interventional Center – Maryland Health Care Commission  http://mhcc.maryland.gov
Howard County General Hospital has received a waiver from the Maryland Health Care commission to provide interventional treatment for certain heart attack patients through the Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) program. Perinatal Referral Center - Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services  www.miemss.org
Howard County General Hospital is designated as a Perinatal Referral Center. This designation recognizes the breadth and quality of obstetric and neonatal services offered to care for seriously ill pregnant women and newborns. Primary Stroke Center – Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services  www.miemss.org
When a person is suffering a stroke, Maryland law requires that EMS ambulances bring the patient to the closest designated Primary Stroke Center. For this Primary Stroke Center designation, MIEMSS standards require hospitals to provide excellent patient care, including rapid assessment by a multi-disciplinary team and the most advanced treatment with clot-busting medications.
