Diversity ≠ Inclusion
Diversity
Involves equitable recruitment and matriculation of individuals of unique race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs and other ideologies.

As it related to medical workforce recruitment and matriculation, our focus is on the equitable engagement of individuals who are under-represented in medicine (URM), as defined by the Association of American Medical Colleges.

Inclusion
Involves the retention, satisfaction, sense of belonging, and feeling of being both valued and respected amongst those from various diverse backgrounds.

Committees
Social Camaraderie
Fostering connections within the various under-represented in medicine (URM) diaspora to promote a sense of community that engages members and promotes mutual trust and friendship.

Community Service
Advocate for house staff engagement with our surrounding community through service and outreach.  Here you will find a central source for various community service projects, endorsed by the Diversity Council, along with links to the program's website.  For more information on how to get involved, please contact us.

Mentorship & Sponsorship
Invest in the under-represented in medicine (URM) community by championing both mentorship and sponsorship at various levels of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Johns Hopkins Medicine.  End goals are (1) Recruitment & Retention; (2) Professional & Leadership Development; (3) Inclusion & Satisfaction.  Current initiatives include:

  • SOM Medical Student - House Staff Mentorship Program
  • GME Recruitment
  • URM Community Investment Continuum
  • Diversity Consortium of East Baltimore Healthcare Learners

  • Micro-Aggressions
  • Promotion of "Allies" amongst non-URMs
  • Resilience Training amongst URMs
