Weight Loss Services
Our Clinical Exercise Physiology and Cardiac Rehabilitation Center offers assessment of body composition, resting metabolism and fitness to provide you with the tools to establish a safe and effective weight loss plan, reassess your progress and avoid weight loss plateaus. We offer the following services.
Body Composition Analysis
Body composition analysis is useful as a general marker of health evaluation and can be used to help set goals towards weight reduction. Loss of body fat is associated with improved heart health, reduced risk of diabetes, lowered blood pressure and improved physical outlook.
Our analysis provides a complete picture of your body makeup. You will learn how much of your total body weight is fat and how much is lean tissue. Afterward, you will receive a full report to help you understand your current body composition and track changes over time.
Our testing services include:
- Skinfold thickness measurement: Your weight may not budge on the scale, yet you are losing body fat. Using calipers to measure skinfold thickness at various sites, we can determine your body’s percentage of fat in relation to lean body mass. We will then use the results to determine a realistic body weight target range. This is a simple, noninvasive test that provides a very precise measurement of your body composition.
- Bioelectrical impedance analysis: Quick, comprehensive and noninvasive. This state-of-the-art test is another tool we use to customize your weight loss program. We measure the body’s resistance, or impedance, to electrical currents using electrodes and a small electrical signal. This signal allows us to measure the impedance through your body. The electrical signal will travel faster through muscle than through fat. The signal cannot be felt when flowing through your body and is not dangerous.
- Circumference measurement of the waist and hips: Using a simple tape measure, we determine the amount of fat around your waist and hips. Since fat takes up more space in your body than muscle, tracking your waist and hip changes over time will be useful information. In addition, where you carry your fat, which helps determine your body shape, can tell us more about your health as well.
Resting Metabolic Rate Test
The resting metabolic rate (RMR) test is a noninvasive test to measure calorie intake per day needed to maintain your current weight. This information is useful in determining a safe and effective goal for calorie intake to reach your weight loss goal.
Your age, genes, diet, percent of body fat and sex are a few factors that influence your metabolism. A measurement of RMR can allow for creating a more individualized goal for caloric intake. RMR measurement can also be helpful to overcome weight loss plateaus.
The exercise assessment consists of a one-on-one session with our exercise physiologist. We use your health history and discuss your goals with you to develop an individualized exercise program best suited for you. During your session, we will evaluate your current fitness, including stamina, strength, balance and flexibility. We will measure your weight, blood pressure and pulse, and watch your heart rhythm. We use this information to advise you on a safe and effective exercise routine to achieve your fitness and weight loss goals.
