Taking Surgical Education to the Next Level at the Wilmer Eye Institute
The Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute is a leader in ophthalmic care and has trained generations of surgical innovators through the time-honored surgical educational model of “see one, do one, teach one.” As operating room technology has evolved rapidly in recent years, so too have the challenges of educating surgeons. The Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute has created the Center of Excellence for Ophthalmic Surgical Education and Training [OphSET] to utilize advances in technology to improve the surgical learning experience for Wilmer residents and fellows – and for practicing surgeons who come to the Center to train. OphSET is home to a six-station state-of-the-art wet lab facility with an additional instructor station. In the wet lab, trainees can use equipment and experience anatomical set-ups that replicate OR conditions. In addition, expert surgeons provide instruction in instrument manipulation and surgical technique during these lifelike surgical training sessions. Another of the Center’s key elements is an innovation and demonstration lab where Wilmer surgeons, Johns Hopkins engineers, and industry partners collaborate to rapidly advance surgical techniques and technology. We are driving surgical innovation forward with the ultimate goal to improve patient outcomes and change the way the world sees – for the better.
