Daniel Brenner grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and attended the University of Michigan, where he grew to love neuroscience while not being interested in the brain. He pursued this interest during his M.D./Ph.D. at Washington University in St. Louis, where his Ph.D. focused on the molecular mechanisms of pain and also offered him the chance to play with lasers. Along the way, he has discovered that he loves cooking, baking and international travel. Additionally, he is also a long-term devotee of Ultimate Frisbee, but several knee injuries have persuaded him that rock climbing is a safer alternative.

Portia Chipendo grew up in Harare, Zimbabwe. She came to the U.S. to attend Wesleyan University for college, where she majored in chemistry. After graduating from college, she worked as a research assistant at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston before enrolling at Harvard Medical School. While in medical school, she developed an interest in health care systems and public policy, and spent a year at Harvard Kennedy School of Government, where she earned a master’s degree in public policy. She hopes to use her training in emergency medicine and public policy to contribute toward building robust medical systems in her home country and beyond.

Stewart Dandorf grew up outside Phoenix, Arizona, and attended the University of Arizona in Tucson for his bachelors and master’s of science degrees in physiology. He then received his M.P.H. from Yale School of Public Health, with a focus on epidemiology of microbial diseases and global health. For his M.P.H. thesis, Stewart conducted a project in rural Ecuador focused on HIV testing and prevention. Stewart returned to Tucson and attended the University of Arizona for medical school. Stewart’s research efforts have included extensive data analyses based at Johns Hopkins focused on inflammatory markers in older HIV patients from the AIDS Linked to the Intravenous Experience cohort and cadaver-based simulation/medical education research at the University of Arizona.

Eric Garfinkel grew up outside Philadelphia in the suburb of Exton, Pennsylvania. In high school, he volunteered for his local ambulance service, and then during college, he served as a paramedic at Penn State EMS. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in energy, business and finance, he attended medical school at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. He hopes to continue pursuing his interest in EMS during residency at Johns Hopkins.

Paul Herman was born in Paris, France, and spent the first years of his life living in Cassis, a small fishing village on the Mediterranean. He did most of his growing up in Los Angeles before attending UCLA, where he double majored in psychobiology and French. He lived in Lyon, France, for two years, where he completed a master’s degree in neuroscience, studying sleep and memory consolidation. Before deciding to pursue medicine, Paul worked for many years in both bench and clinical research at the National Institutes of Health and a community HIV/AIDS clinic in Washington, D.C. Paul enjoys brewing beer, spending time outdoors and discovering new foodie spots.

Stephanie Kemp was born and raised in a small town in Washington state. She is married to a master sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. She attended the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, where she majored in biology, with minors in both anthropology and chemistry. She attended the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.

Breann Kroll grew up in a suburb of Minneapolis. She majored in biology and Spanish at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and spent a semester abroad in Seville, Spain. She participated in a medical mission trip to Nicaragua that strengthened her desire to help the underserved. She then attended medical school at the University of Minnesota, where she discovered her love of emergency medicine.

Joshua Trebach grew up in Alexandria, Virginia, with his three brothers, four dogs and two loving parents. During undergraduate at Virginia Tech, Josh spent his time volunteering at a crisis intervention and suicide hotline. Josh attended the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he was able to perform research (in emergency medicine and infectious disease) and serve the Baltimore community through volunteering. Josh looks forward to his residency in emergency medicine at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Ruben Troncoso was born in Hoboken, New Jersey, and raised in Miami, Florida. He attended the University of Florida, where he majored in health science, and then attended Florida International University to earn his M.P.H. He’s collaborated with the Miami-Dade County Health Department, and his medical school research focused on disaster preparedness and response. He hopes to expand his knowledge base in pre-hospital and critical care, and aims to incorporate socioeconomic based interventions in the Emergency Department.

Agnes Annetie’ Usoro was born in Akwa-Ibom State, Nigeria, but raised in Sugar Land, Texas. She attended college at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and pursued an undergraduate degree in nursing. After graduation, she moved back to Texas and worked as an ICU nurse in Texas Medical Center. Realizing her love for medicine, she furthered her career by attending medical school at the University of Texas Medical Branch School of Medicine. While there, she developed a strong passion for global health and ultrasound, and completed a scholarly track in global health. She hopes to pursue these interests during her residency training at The Johns Hopkins University.
