Systems engineering tools are well suited to perform macro-analyses of complex public health systems. For example, SMART Vaccines developed in concert with the Institute of Medicine and National Academy of Engineering is a pioneering decision support tool used to prioritize development of new vaccines globally. The software uses a Markov model engine to simulate population processes that estimate health and economic impacts for user-defined vaccine candidates over time. Health and economic measures are then assessed within a broader multi-criteria decision framework to support vaccine prioritization decisions.
