When do I have to arrive at the hospital on the day of surgery?
You need to arrive at the hospital 2-hours prior to surgery, typically at 5:30am.
What will happen when I arrive to the hospital?
When you arrive at the hospital, you will check in and be brought back to the pre-op area. You will be asked to change into a surgical gown and your personal items will be put into a bag. The nursing staff will begin your check in. This involves asking questions, taking blood samples, starting an IV for fluids, and monitoring your vital signs with a blood pressure cuff and oxygen monitor.
Will I see the doctor before surgery?
You will be meeting a lot of people the morning of surgery. In addition to the nurse that checks you in, you will see your doctor, our PA, anesthesiologists, and possibly other surgical attending’s and surgical residents who assist in the operating room. Together everyone works as a team to ensure the best possible outcome.
Who will be in the operating room?
The operating room is a team environment. In addition to your doctor, our PA, the surgical attending’s and residents you met in the pre-op area, the anesthesia team will be responsible for putting you to sleep and keeping you safe during the operation. There will also be nurses and scrub techs in the room to help you get set up on the operating room bed and help you get to sleep.
Will I go home after surgery?
After surgery, patients will stay in the hospital at least overnight. After surgery, you will be placed in a hospital room where you will be monitored. When you are discharged, it is important you have someone to drive you home, as you will not be able to drive while on pain medication and after surgery. Of course, if the surgeon or you feel there is a serious problem, the surgical team will reevaluate if you are ready to be discharged.
What do I need to bring to the hospital with me?
You should bring essential items to the hospital, this includes: a form of identification, such as a license, and your insurance card. When you are discharged, we recommend bringing large comfy clothes to go home in.
Who will I follow-up with after I am discharged from the hospital?
After you are discharged from the hospital, you will have follow-up appointments with someone on the clinical team. Your first post-op appointment date and time will be printed with your discharge paperwork. If you have any questions, please call (844)-546-5645.
