Clinical Education & Training

Advanced Burn Life Support (ABLS) Provider Certification Courses:

Many of our staff members are certified instructors for ABLS Provider Certification Courses and participate in the delivery of these courses throughout the United States for numerous healthcare professionals in hospital settings, public health facilities, as well as training for U.S. Army & Navy personnel.  This 8-hour certification course is designed to provide physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, therapists and EMS personnel with the ability to assess and stabilize patients with serious burn injuries, and identify those patients needing transfer to a Burn Center.  The course provides guidelines in the assessment and management of the burn patient during the first 24 hours post injury. For more information about ABLS certification courses or to register on-line for upcoming courses, please go the American Burn Association Website.

Emergency Department Burn Poster Program:

This 30-minute program provides an emergency burn care and referral poster along with peer education to local emergency department colleagues throughout the region in an effort to standardize early burn management and referral.

Military Burn Education:

The Johns Hopkins Burn Center proudly serves as a training center for United States military personnel stationed in various locations around the world including Iraq and Afghanistan. We have provided Advanced Burn Life Support Provider Certification Courses for both U.S. Army and Navy medical personnel. We are also currently affiliated with the U.S. Air Force C-STARS program, which offers training for military medical personnel in the areas of trauma and critical care.

EMS/Firefighter Burn Course:

This course provides emergency burn care education to our local EMS providers and firefighters. It is a 4-hour course that includes formal lectures, video presentations and interactive case studies. It is designated by the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS) to provide four hours of continuing education.

Nursing School Education:

The Johns Hopkins Burn Center provides a 2-3 hour burn care lecture at various schools of nursing within our region including Anne Arundel County Community College, Howard County Community College, Hagerstown Community College, Baltimore County Community College, Carroll County Community College and Blue Ridge Community and Technical College. We also serve as a clinical rotation site for nursing students from Baltimore County Community College.

Burn Care Education:

Numerous staff members participate in burn care education for healthcare professionals throughout the region and United States at various professional conferences, healthcare facilities and annual meetings.

On-site Clinical Training Opportunities:

We provide on-site training opportunities for numerous professionals throughout the region and nationally. We currently serve as a clinical training site for nursing students, paramedic students, occupational and physical therapy students, psychology students, dietician students, Air force personnel and firefighters.
