Patient Centered Care

The peace of mind and physical wellbeing of our patients are our primary concerns. Read what our patients have to say about their experience with The Center for Bloodless Medicine and Surgery at Johns Hopkins.

“I tried not to panic when I learned about my cancer diagnosis and the need for major surgery to remove the cancer tumor. The first thought that ran through my mind was to find the best and most skilled surgeon and medical team who would respect my wishes and treat me without the use of blood transfusions. I am happy to say that I found the "dream team" at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Doctors Steven Frank and James Rothschild of the JHH bloodless medicine/surgery program were right there by my side for the two surgeries and spent quality time with me during recovery. They gave me the assurance I needed to heal completely on all levels--physically, mentally, and emotionally. I believe I had already won half the battle against cancer the moment I chose JHH and its bloodless medicine/surgery program for my treatment.”

“I have had two major operations at JHH and benefited from their bloodless program. Even before my operations, it was clear that my wishes about avoiding blood transfusions would be honored and respected. Their high level of professionalism was exceeded only by the warm, compassionate care I received. I count these individuals as life-long friends.”

“Thank you, Dr. Frank, for your thorough expertise and your team.  We were pleased beyond words at every step of our experience with the surgery. For patients that do not accept blood transfusions, an anesthesiologist can be the largest concern, but as you spoke I watched my parents’ anxiety and stress disappear completely!  Their only concern after you explained everything was whether everyone had washed their hands!  Thank you again for your excellent demonstration of how the healthcare system can work when people care about people.”

“First of all I would like to say ‘thank you’ to Dr. Steve Frank and his team for the excellent care that I received. This was the first time I had ever had surgery. I was scared and nervous, and I did not know what to expect.  I had spoken to several people who had surgeries in the past, with the same concern that I had—no blood transfusions. I was recommended to Dr. Frank and his team. Dr. Frank met with me and explained the different procedures that are available.  My request was honored and respected.  Dr. Frank and his team were very comforting and kind. My surgery went very well. Dr. Frank and his team are excellent.”

– A.J., Baltimore, MD

"We want to thank all of the team for the excellent care given to our daughter before, during and after the open heart surgery she underwent. Duke Cameron was awesome. I never met a surgeon that has shown such personal interest in  his patient. Andrew Pippa was the contact I had there at Johns Hopkins and he is the person responsible for us going there. Without his help and support, along with Liz Dackiw and Dr. Steve Franks's encouragement, I'm not sure she would have gone through with the surgery. There were more risks involved because she is very samll framed, but everything worked out and getting back to her job is her ultimate goal. Even the anesthesiologists were great. We did not have to worry about them pushing the blood issue with us as one of Jehovah's Witnesses. Seems everyone involved with this program did their job very well and that should make all of you very proud."
