Dr. Julia Kim, MD, MPH is the Associate Vice Chair of Ambulatory Quality for the Johns Hopkins Children's Center and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics. Her clinical and research interests focus on pediatric quality improvement (QI) and patient safety, patient engagement and medication safety, and improving preventive health services delivery to children in the primary care setting. Her work with pediatric QI and patient safety spans both outpatient and inpatient settings, including a Lean Sigma project on improving home medication reconciliation on hospital admission. Dr. Kim received her pediatric and chief residency training at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. She completed fellowship training in General Academic Pediatrics, Comparative Effectiveness Research, and Preventive Medicine at Johns Hopkins University. She received QI and Patient Safety training from the Johns Hopkins Armstrong Institute including her Lean Sigma Green Belt Certification. She served as the American Academy of Pediatrics Maryland Chapter Medical Director of Quality Improvement and Patient Safety from 2014-2015 and led a pediatric obesity QI learning collaborative with primary care pediatricians throughout Maryland.

Dr. Samantha Pitts, MD, MPH is an Assistant Professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine and core faculty of the Armstrong Institute. Dr. Pitts completed her internal medicine residency at the University of California San Francisco, where she focused on primary care and evidence-based medicine. She subsequently received her MPH in Epidemiology from the University of California, Berkeley and completed fellowship training in General Internal Medicine and Comparative Effectiveness Research at Johns Hopkins. She is the Champion of a Comprehensive Unit-based Safety Program (CUSP) team in General Internal Medicine and a former Scholar of the Patient Safety and Leadership Academy. Her research focuses on improving patient safety and delivery of evidence-based care in ambulatory settings through implementation of team-based models of care, CUSP, and the use of health information technology.

As the Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery (OHNS) Physician Advisor I am responsible for various regulatory and compliance requirements of our clinical operations. One of the main duties is providing support and guidance for departmental projects relating to patient safety, quality, and service. In addition, evolutions in resident and fellow education have expanded to include these areas as part of training. In 2013 we created the OHNS Resident Quality Council, an educational module that includes a curriculum in quality, based on the Institute of Medicine's model of quality, and that satisfies the ACGME Next Accreditation System in terms of patient safety, quality, and systems based improvement. The Council has 4 groups, and each has an active quality project. As the Director of the OHNS Adult Inpatient Consultation service I have worked very closely with residents and other services that request our services: trying to improve a challenging poorly understood inpatient enterprise. At the hospital level, these efforts include health IT innovation and data driven metrics as part of a taskforce of the Clinical Quality Improvement Council (CQI). The role of health IT and quality and quantity of clinical documentation has emerged as an important area of healthcare and departmental and hospital management. I work closely with the Clinical Data and Documentation Committee and the Clinical Documentation Excellence team.


Lori Paine

Dr. Paine serves as the Senior Director of Patient Safety for The Johns Hopkins Medicine Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality and The Johns Hopkins Hospital. In this role, she is responsible for the strategic and tactical oversight of the Patient Safety programs, including the Comprehensive Unit-based Safety Program (CUSP), culture assessment, Health IT safety, Human Factors, second victim support as well as event reporting. She served on the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and the National Quality Forum's Expert Panel for Common Formats in event reporting. She has spoken to audiences and consulted with hospitals nationally and internationally on CUSP, Science of Patient Safety, event reporting, high reliability, safety culture measurement and improvement as well as patient and family involvement in safety. Of particular interest in her practice as a Patient Safety Officer is mindful organizing, risk assessment and culture.

She is an adjunct faculty member at the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing and associate faculty member at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She holds a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from Nazareth College of Rochester, a Master's degree in Applied Behavioral Science and Change Management from the Johns Hopkins University and a Doctorate of Public Health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She came to The Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1988 as a Labor & Delivery nurse. In addition to clinical and patient care management experience, she has held positions in hospital administration, product line development, and work process redesign.
