Quality Improvement Initiatives

High-value innovations must include house staff to effectively create long-standing improvements in practice through education in concert with quality improvement. Accordingly, the High Value Practice Alliance presents the Choosing Wisely Imaging Challenge, a slate of quality improvement projects based on 40 of the Choosing Wisely imaging recommendations. Because of the high cost of many advanced imaging exams, the Department of Radiology and Radiological Science has proposed 20 Choosing Wisely projects geared at refining utilization of diagnostic tests. Each initiative should be directed by a cross-departmental team of residents and faculty members.

The campaign is designed to generate cross-departmental collaborations with these overriding goals:

  1. Evaluate the quality of Johns Hopkins' ordering practice with respect to imaging.
  2. Engage house staff and faculty projects to improve how the institution practices.
  3. Continue broadcasting our message and educating house staff, providers and faculty members about the importance of reducing unnecessary testing.

Our expectations for house staff who participate by selecting a project:

  1. Review and understand the supportive evidence.
  2. Determine if Johns Hopkins' practice complies with the recommendation.
  3. If we are ordering inappropriately, design an intervention to improve our practice.
  4. Measure changes pre and post-intervention.
