Why did you decide to join Johns Hopkins Medicine?

Feeling of collegiality during my initial visits. Strengths in related areas of research.

Why have you decided to stay at Johns Hopkins Medicine?

Supportive colleagues in my division, clinical pharmacology and the overall supportive environment among basic science colleagues across the school. Collaborative atmosphere that facilitates taking exciting new research directions.

Don’t internalize other people’s opinions about what you are capable of accomplishing or contributing. Be who you are and go for what you want.

Please tell us about how you reached your leadership position.

I made grassroots efforts to create change where I thought that I could make an impact, and found mentors who would support me in those efforts and provide opportunities for me to grow.

Which of your accomplishments are you most proud of at Johns Hopkins Medicine?

Playing a role in empowering the students and postdocs who I have mentored reach their academic goals and to become successful (with their success being something that they define in their own terms).

What advice would you give a woman who is aspiring to grow in her leadership responsibilities?

Don’t internalize other people’s opinions about what you are capable of accomplishing or contributing. Be who you are and go for what you want.
