Kathy Smith is responsible for leading the development and implementation of comprehensive marketing, communications, e-strategy and web programs to support the strategic priorities of The Johns Hopkins Hospital. She also has the responsibility of leading and guiding strategic marketing and outreach to support the tripartite mission of patient care, research and education across Johns Hopkins Medicine, including the school of medicine and all member organizations.

Smith brings 27 years of health care and academic marketing and public relations experience to Johns Hopkins, joining Johns Hopkins Medicine Marketing and Communications in 2001. In past roles with the department, she has managed internal communications related to patient and employee satisfaction, patient safety, privacy and human resources, and crisis/issues management. Prior to Johns Hopkins, Smith worked in account management for top ranked, New York-based health care and pharmaceutical public relations and marketing agencies, including Chandler Chicco Agency, Edelman and Ruder Finn. She has also worked as a communications leader for The University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill’s Kenan-Flagler Business School and in marketing for several community hospitals.

Smith is a 2007 graduate of the Johns Hopkins Medicine Leadership Development Program. She is a 1991 Phi Beta Kappa journalism and public relations graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill, and she obtained her graduate degree in communication from The Johns Hopkins University. 

Smith lives in Ellicott City, Maryland, with her husband, the Rev. Taylor Smith. They have two sons — one is in college and the other is in high school.
