Hasan Zia

Hasan Zia, M.D., M.B.A., F.A.C.S., leads strategic planning, clinical program performance, patient safety and quality improvement, and finance for Sibley Memorial Hospital. He also oversees operations for the hospital, the Sibley Ambulatory Surgery Center and the Renaissance Skilled Nursing Facility. In collaboration with the Johns Hopkins Health System and School of Medicine leadership teams, Dr. Zia is engaged in the expansion of clinical services at Sibley Memorial Hospital, including the addition of the Johns Hopkins Medicine Proton Therapy Center, as well as numerous complex, sub-specialty programs through the Kimmel Cancer Center at Sibley and other School of Medicine departments. 

Dr. Zia leads Sibley's efforts to improve access to high quality, inclusive and equitable health care for residents across the District of Columbia through the Maternal Health Access program and work with Unity Health Care, the largest network of community health centers in Washington, D.C. With a focus on enhancing health and well-being for residents in D.C.'s Wards 7 and 8, Dr. Zia also champions Sibley's Ward Infinity, a program that works in collaboration with residents to accelerate the development of their innovative health solutions. 

Dr. Zia brings 20 years of experience as a fellowship-trained physician and 15 years of experience as a clinical leader. Prior to becoming president, he held a variety of positions at Sibley including vice president of medical affairs and chief medical officer, director of critical care and emergency surgery, and patient safety officer and medical director for quality and patient safety. He has also served as chief medical information officer, leading the implementation of the Epic electronic medical record at Sibley and Howard County General Hospital.

Dr. Zia received his medical degree from the University of Virginia (UVA) and completed his surgical residency at George Washington University. He also completed a fellowship in trauma surgery and surgical critical care at UVA. He holds a master of business administration degree in health care management from the Johns Hopkins University Carey School of Business. 

Dr. Zia previously held a clinical appointment at the UVA School of Medicine and currently has a clinical appointment through the Department of Surgery at Johns Hopkins University. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and he has completed the Baldrige Executive Fellows program administered through the United States Department of Commerce, National Institute of Standards and Technology. He is currently serving as chair of the board of the District of Columbia Hospital Association.
