Engage with Our Center

Our Center provides STD point-of care technology developers with many opportunities to engage with us. Academic sites, research organizations, and companies with promising technologies may be able to work with us. We are technology agnostic in that we support all types of STD point-of-care technologies. Our goal is to aid in transitioning these technologies from the research laboratory to commercial products.

During the past five years, our Center has worked with over 40 companies and directly funded developmental efforts for 10 of these organizations. The metric of our success in supporting these funded organizations is their ability to sustain development funding. Approximately 86% of the companies funded by the Center have gone on to capture at least one and usually multiple developmental awards. Follow-on funding for Center subawardees ranges from $250,000 to $23.5 million

The first step in engaging with the Center is to speak with one of our Principal Investigators, Dr Gaydos or Dr. Manabe, or with the lead of our Technology Development Core, Dr. Jackman. During the initial discussion, our scientists will want to determine the level of maturity of your technology, its applicability to STDs, and the immediate needs of your organization. Following this discussion, they may suggest how you can best engage with us. There are 8 types of support or interaction we offer technology developers:

  1. Consulting with Center scientists
  2. Requesting de-identified clinical specimens and/or laboratory grown organisms for testing POC devices
  3. Collaborating with the Center for external funding
  4. Participating in focus groups or WALEX activities
  5. Testing pilot POC devices in the research laboratory or in clinics associated with the Center
  6. Accessing our Technology Watch Database (TWD)
  7. Applying for funding from the Center
  8. Receiving developmental guidance through systems engineering

2019 Funding Opportunity

The Center provides a limited number of annual awards to technology developers. The funding process is competitive and is open to developers whose technology is beyond the concept stage. The funding is intended to provide tactical support for critical path experiments. Our 2019 solicitation title was Strategic Improvements to Rapid, Simple Point-of-Care Tests for Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs).

The 2019 proposal submission period is closed. Please check back in October 2019 for information regarding the 2020 solicitation timeline.
