  • Christopher Chute Lab

    Work in the Christopher Chute Lab involves the management of clinical data to enable effective evidence-based clinical practice and translational research. Recently, we developed an EHR-based genetic testing knowledge base to be integrated into the genetic testing ontology (GTO) and identified potential barriers to pharmacogenomics clinical decision support (CDS) implementation.

  • Claire Snyder Lab

    Researchers in the Claire Snyder Lab study the quality of cancer care, with a special focus on two areas: the quality of life for cancer patients undergoing treatment and the coordination of care between cancer specialists and primary care providers. As part of our quality-of-life research, we're investigating the use of patient-reported outcome questionnaires in routine oncology practice as well as developing a website for collecting the questionnaires and linking them with the electronic medical record. As part of our cancer-survivorship research, we've conducted large database studies to identify the physician specialties involved in the care of cancer survivors and to determine how that relates to survivors receiving recommended follow-up care. We're also working with investigators in the Sydney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center to develop care strategies for breast cancer survivors.

    Research in the Craig Pollack Lab focuses on cancer prevention and control, particularly prostate cancer. We recently conducted a cohort study of hypertensive African Americans to examine how access to care, treatment ambivalence and medication non-adherence affect long-term mortality.

  • Daniel Ford Lab

    Research in the Daniel Ford Lab seeks to understand the relationships between depression and various chronic medical conditions. Recently, we've focused on depression and coronary artery disease as well as tactics for improving care for patients with medical comorbidity. Our research was among the first to document depression as a risk factor for myocardial infarction and stroke. Our team is also interested in exploring how information technology can be used to improve the care of patients with depression and tobacco abuse.

    Research in the Edgar Miller Lab focuses on nutrition, hypertension and kidney disease. Current projects include a National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute study on dietary carbohydrate and glycemic index effects on markers of oxidative stress, inflammation and kidney function; and a National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases randomized controlled trial that examines the effects of omega-3 fatty acid supplementation on urine protein excretion in diabetic kidney disease.

  • Felicia Hill-Briggs Lab

    Research in the Felicia Hill-Briggs Lab focuses on assessment methods and clinical intervention in behavioral medicine, with an emphasis on patient self-management and outcomes in ethnic minorities with chronic diseases. We are interested in the application of problem-solving and decision-making models to self-management and health behavior change. Our recent research involves examining problem-solving training for cardiovascular disease risk self-management in African Americans with type 2 diabetes. We also have a long-standing interest in cognitive/neuropsychological processes in chronic diseases, translation of research to clinical practice settings and community-based settings, and evidence-based behavioral medicine.

  • Gail Daumit Lab

    Research in the Gail Daumit Lab is devoted to improving overall health and decreasing premature mortality for people with serious mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. We have conducted observational studies to determine and convey the burden of physical health problems in this vulnerable population, and are currently leading a randomized trial funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute to test a comprehensive cardiovascular risk reduction program in people with serious mental illness.

  • Gail Geller Lab

    The Gail Geller Lab primarily conducts empirical quantitative and qualitative research on the ethical and social implications of genetic testing in the adult, pediatric and family contexts. We have focused on clinical-patient communication under conditions of uncertainty; professionalism and humanism in medical education; cross-cultural variation in concepts of health and disease; and clinician suffering and moral distress. We explore these topics in a range of health care contexts, including genomics, complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) and palliative care. Our researchers have a longstanding interest in medical socialization, provider-patient communication under conditions of uncertainty and cultural differences in attitudes toward health and disease. We also explore the intersection of CAM and bioethics, as well as the role of palliative care in chronic diseases, such as muscular dystrophy and sickle cell disease.

    Our research focuses at the nexus of HIV and alcohol and other substance use. We examine epidemiological aspects of HIV and alcohol use/other drug use among persons with HIV (PWH), and work on the adaptation and testing of person and computer-delivered interventions for unhealthy alcohol use, particularly among women.

  • GeneSTAR Research Program

    Research at the GeneSTAR Research Center focuses primarily on discovering and amplifying mechanisms of atherogenic vascular diseases and attendant comorbidities. We search for genetic and nongenetic factors and biological cascades that are associated with successful vascular aging and well-being. Our work includes biological, lifestyle and genetic models of both health and disease in families who are putatively at high risk for premature disease. We collect data on diet, physical activity, smoking, mental stress, cognition, sociodemographic and psychological factors, as well as traditional lipid, metabolic and inflammatory biomarkers, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular phenotypes, and measures of vascular function. Our research also seeks to better understand racial disparities and translation to population-based and patient approaches to enhancing health and wellness in diverse high-risk populations.

  • Hsin-Chieh Yeh Lab

    Work in the Hsin-Chieh Yeh Lab focuses on clinical trials and cohort studies of diabetes, obesity and behavioral intervention, cancer and hypertension. Recent investigations have focused on novel risk factors and complications related to obesity and type 2 diabetes, particularly lung function, smoking and cancer. We recently co-led a randomized clinical trial of tailored dietary advice for consumption of dietary supplements to lower blood pressure and improve cardiovascular disease risk factors in hypertensive urban African Americans.
