Karthik Meiyappan Udayappan
Hometown: Pleasanton, CA
Medical School: University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine
What are your career goals?
The fundamental question we answer for our patients is the question "Doc, what is wrong with me?" Studies show diagnostic error will affect each of us, directly or indirectly, at least once in our lifetime. I would like to contribute to this burgeoning movement to reduce misdiagnosis related harm through educational, patient safety and systems, entrepreneurial, and technology development initiatives.
Concurrently, I believe healthcare cannot be subject to the same market forces as other commodities. The caliber of medical care you'd want your own family to receive will undoubtedly be rooted in emotional labor and deep empathy. But because these are rarely measured and incentivized, economics disproportionately favors more and more medical procedures, gadgets, and drug development. As one result, providers ever-increasingly need "to be more efficient" and patients feels things are done to them rather than for them. I want to work to reverse this.
