Dear Women Faculty,
Again, I just wanted to take the time to make you aware of many of our upcoming programs, as well as events in the area which will likely be of interest.
You are invited to a free screening of the powerful film, Miss Representation, at the Owens Auditorium (between CRB 1 & 2) on Monday, March 5 from 6-7:30pm with an optional discussion to follow. The facilitated 1 hour optional discussion after the movie will be with Catherine Morrison, Karen Swartz (Psychiatry) and Erika Falk (Director of the Johns Hopkins Master of Arts in Communication program in DC, she is actually featured in the film!) Pizza and drinks will be provided at 5:15pm in the area just outside the auditorium. It is First Come/First Served and no RSVP is necessary.
To see a 2 minute or 8 minute trailer for the film, go to www.missrepresentation.org.
Also in the next few days, the BSO will be sponsoring the WOW event, Women of the World. Please see the attached preliminary brochure describing this weekend long event. Many women faculty from Johns Hopkins University have contributed to the content of this event, and will be speaking at this. Hopefully, you will find the time to attend part of this program. I have additionally been made aware of a great opportunity for faculty to attend a performance at the BSO in May where they can directly meet Marin Alsop, the musical director of the BSO. Please go to the attached website for further information. WOW Baltimore Website
Additionally, the OWISM in collaboration with the Professional Development and Career Office will be hosting its next session in the “Bridging the Gap” series which has been developed for Women Post Doctoral Students (both in the basic sciences and clinical areas) and Junior Faculty. Our next session will take place on Thursday, April 12, 2012 from 9:00 to 10:00 AM in the Broadway Research Building-BRB G03. It is entitled “Importance of Negotiation for your Success” and will be facilitated by Catherine Morrison, Associate Faculty in the Department of Health Policy and Management at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. This interactive session will provide important information in regards to how to negotiate for your early career advancement. A light breakfast will be served. This session is open to all Post Doctoral Students as well as faculty. Please reply to the class="apple-converted-space" OWISM@jhmi.edu class="apple-converted-space" if you plan to attend, and indicate that you are responding to this specific event. Attached is further information about our bridging the gap program !
Of importance, given the high number of people interested in the Office of Work, Life and Engagement programs, they have created a listserv to share a monthly calendar of events and other announcements. The listserv is set up so that you may respond to email@example.com with any questions. They typically send monthly messages to this listserv. You will not receive messages from other members of the listserv. They offer a variety of workshops and events to the Hopkins community to help faculty and staff enrich their personal and professional lives. Please see the attached ‘Calendar of Events’ for information about offerings in March. To register for a workshop, visit WorkLife Registration.
Lastly, we are planning the Fourth Annual OWISM Event on June 6, 2012 at 4:00 PM. Catherine DeAngelis will be discussing her brilliant professional journey as she moved to become the editor of JAMA. We are presently soliciting nominations for the Vice Dean’s Award for the advancement of Women Faculty. Please nominate faculty you think is deserving of this honor! Attached are further details about the event and nomination process.
Finally, I would like to send along an article of interest. Please see this attached Patsy Mink .pdf! Hope you enjoy this and I look forward to seeing many of you at upcoming events!
