Current Research in Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

The faculty of the Division of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery are engaged in research in the following areas:

Nicholas Mahoney, M.D.

  • The volume of the eye socket and specifically looking at how it changes with orbital trauma and thyroid eye disease
  • Surgery for patients with thyroid eye disease to create more space in the eye socket and how that affects the eye, position and movement

Shannath Merbs, M.D., Ph.D.

  • Epigenetic gene regulation in the retina
  • The contribution of the epigenetic mechanisms to glaucoma and macular degeneration
  • Trachoma: has developed a new surgical instrument called the TT clamp to help improve the outcome of trichiasis surgery
