Dr. Fernando Arevalo Appointed New President of the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology

J. Fernando Arevalo, M.D., F.A.C.S., representing his native country of Venezuela, was recently appointed the new (30th) President of the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology.

The Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology represents more than 15,000 ophthalmologists and is accepted by all Latin American ophthalmologists as their one and only international representative. It is also universally recognized by the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) as the representative body of ophthalmology in the Americas.


Dr. Arevalo has long been recognized as one of the leading ophthalmologists in South America and in 2001 founded the Arevalo-Coutinho Foundation for Research in Ophthalmology. He currently serves as the Edmund F. and Virginia B. Ball Professor of Ophthalmology in the Retina Division and as Chief of Ophthalmology at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. As a clinical scientist, Dr. Arevalo has more than 900 scientific publications, 13 books, more than 800 scientific paper presentations and more than 1100 invited lecture presentations in North America, South America, Central America, Europe, Africa and Asia that have led to international recognition and awards.
