Dr. Debasish Sinha, an associate professor of ophthalmology at the Wilmer Eye Institute, has been awarded the Carolyn K. McGillvray Memorial Award for Macular Degeneration Research from the BrightFocus Foundation. The $120,000 research grant will support Dr. Sinha's current project, "Understanding how dysregulation of autophagy/phagocytosis activates the immune system in RPE cells, leading to AMD-like pathology." His team's goal is to understand how the immune system affects the molecular beginnings of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), with the goal of developing better treatments for early AMD.
Dr. Sinha is the director of the Glia Research Laboratory at Wilmer. To learn more about what he and his team are doing to understand the molecular structure of retinal diseases such as macular degeneration, visit his lab's website.
