Deepak P Edward, M.D. is the Jonas S. Friedenwald Professor of Ophthalmology and a professor of pathology at the Wilmer Eye Institute and the Director of Research at King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. He obtained his medical degree from St. John’s Medical College in Bangalore India, his ophthalmology residency and ophthalmic pathology fellowship at the University of Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary in Chicago, and glaucoma fellowship at Washington University School of Medicine, St Louis, MO. Prior to joining Wilmer Eye institute he was on faculty at the University of Illinois with appointments in the Department of Ophthalmology, Pathology, Chemistry and Mechanical Engineering and then at Summa Health Systems, Akron OH.
Dr. Edward has a wide range of research interests in the fields of ophthalmic education, glaucoma, ophthalmic pathology, biomarkers, cell biology and proteomics. His research has been funded by the American Glaucoma Society, AHAF, the Department of Defense, and the National Eye Institute. He has memberships in a number of professional societies including the Verhoeff-Zimmerman Society, and the American Ophthalmological Society. He currently serves as the President of the American Association of Oncologists and Pathologists and the Treasurer of the International Society of Ophthalmic Pathology. He is also Editor in Chief of Middle East African Journal of Ophthalmology and is on the editorial board of other journals and publications.
Dr. Edward was the recipient of the first American Glaucoma Society Research Award, Achievement Award and Secretariat Awards from the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He has received numerous teaching awards throughout his career.
