Ashley Behrens, M.D., is a Cornea, Refractive Surgery and External Diseases Specialist. Before joining the Wilmer Eye Institute, he completed extensive subspecialty training in South America (Venezuela), Germany and the U.S., and became the Chairman of one of the largest ophthalmology departments in his home country of Venezuela. Dr. Behrens is a surgical innovator and has developed novel therapeutic approaches that have helped many patients regain their vision worldwide. He has published several studies in recognized journals in several languages and has devoted his career to the cure of corneal diseases and the surgical correction of refractive errors (nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia).

Dr. Behrens has been Editor and reviewer of prestigious scientific journals. He has been recipient of several national and international awards for his contributions to ophthalmology, especially from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Pan American Association of Ophthalmology.  Due to his meritorious career, Dr. Behrens has been selected as a biographee in the famous publications “Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare” and “Who’s Who in America.”

Dr. Behrens holds the endowed KKESH/Wilmer Professorship in International Ophthalmology. Since July 2010, he has been on special assignment as the Medical Director of the prestigious King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
