Barañano, David

David E. Barañano, M.D. PhD. is an assistant professor of Ophthalmology in the Retina Division of the Wilmer Eye Institute at The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and has subspecialty training in vitreoretinal diseases and surgery. His clinical expertise includes treatment of retinal detachment, trauma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, macular hole, vascular occlusions, and epiretinal membrane. Dr. Barañano also has a particular interest in caring for children with retinal diseases, including retinopathy of prematurity, Coats disease, persistent fetal vasculature, and other rare conditions.

Dr. Barañano received his B.S. in chemistry from Yale University. He earned his M.D. and Ph.D. (in neuroscience) at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He completed his medicine internship at the University of Maryland – Mercy Medical Center. He completed his ophthalmology residency at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins and went to Emory University for his fellowship training in vitreoretinal disease and surgery. After completion of his training, Dr. Barañano returned to Wilmer to serve as the 102nd Assistant Chief of Service (Chief Resident), supervising and training the 21 physicians of the Wilmer residency.

Dr. Barañano is a member of the Academy of Ophthalmology, the Association of Retina Specialists, Society of Heed Fellows, the Association of Vision and Ophthalmology, and the Maryland Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons. He is involved in national clinical trials and has published extensively. Outside of work, Dr. Barañano enjoys fishing, playing squash, and spending time with his wife and two year-old son.

Dr. Baranano sees patients at both the Johns Hopkins East Baltimore Campus (The Johns Hopkins Hospital) and at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Columbia.
