Message from the Program Director

Dr. Srikumaran

The most enjoyable part of a Program Director's job is seeing a group of enthusiastic young residents grow and mature over their three years into confident, well-trained ophthalmologists. Our task is made easier by the outstanding caliber of the residents who come here, and the superb faculty who teach them. For the applicant who wants to get the most out of residency, the program offers first-class facilities, clinical exposure, and research opportunities. Unique features of the program, such as the close bonds which develop between the residents and the Chief Resident (a former Wilmer resident who returns as a faculty member following his/her fellowship), the weekly Thursday morning didactic sessions, the General Eye Service (in which residents assume progressively independent supervision of their own patients), and the third-year elective (often taken at the famous Aravind Eye Hospital in India), make for an unparalleled opportunity for our residents.

Residency education is a constantly evolving process. We strive to incorporate new theories, discoveries and techniques into the program under the principle that, while the actual practice of ophthalmology may change dramatically over the years, the love of learning should be constant.

Divya Srikumaran, M.D.
