Universities and researchers can improve their chances
of getting grants from the federal government by "studying the study
section's membership roster" when applying to the NIH for awards.
These and other tips are included in a special feature offered by Science
magazine, which also includes strategies on making it to the "top
of the pile" when applying for a new researcher grant and when seeking
funding from the National Science Foundation. To view this information,

A pilot effort was begun in 2006 to allow new investigators to have the option of submitting a resubmission/amended R01 application for consecutive review cycles, saving four months. This pilot was extended to twenty two additional study sections in January of 2007 and forty-six more study sections in April 2007. Beginning with the September/October 2007 Study Section meetings, this option is extending to all new investigator R01 applications submitted for standard receipt dates (this does not include submissions for RFAs and PARs with special dates). The CSR recurring study sections that review new investigator R01 applications will meet on a schedule to allow consecutive cycle resubmissions. There is no longer a requirement that the resubmission application return to the same study section that reviewed the previous version. If a different study section is requested, a cover letter making that request must be included with the submission of the application. As with all applications, the final decision on assignment resides with the Division of Receipt and Referral in CSR. The NIH is aligning the receipt dates of the broad-based
Biomedical Information Science and Technology Initiative (BISTI) funding
opportunity announcements (FOA) with the standard due dates for competing
applications (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/funding/ The standard receipt dates for new R01 applications
are February 5, June 5, and October 5; the standard receipt dates for
renewal, resubmission and revision R01 applications are March 5, July
5 and November 5. The new expiration date is May 8, 2009. All other dates
remain the same. For complete information, click here:
