The FMD Committee is now accepting applications for the next cycle
of awards. This fund was established to provide modest support for proposals
typically not funded by extramural agencies or other funding programs
of the School of Medicine. The primary goal of the FMD is to enhance
interdisciplinary and interdepartmental research at Johns Hopkins. The
highest priority will be given to proposals that clearly will lead to
new extramural grant applications for core resources, shared instrumentation,
program-projects, research centers, etc. The application deadline
is September 15. For complete details on this program, including
application instructions, click here: http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/Research/ora/Funding/fmd.html.

Microsoft New Faculty Fellowship Program
for 2009
RESPONSE NEEDED BY: Monday, September 1, 2008
Microsoft's New Faculty Fellowship Program awards promising young researchers
who are improving and expanding the boundaries of computer science.
This program supports creative faculty who are likely to produce a significant
impact in their discipline as they become the next leaders in the field.
The award for this program will be $200,000 in unrestricted funds. Selected
nominees must hold a tenure- track position and be within six (6) years
of receiving their Ph.D., Sc.D., or M.D. Additional program information
can be obtained on the Microsoft website : http://research.microsoft.com/ur/us/nff/
Since Johns Hopkins can nominate only one candidate for the New Faculty
Fellowship Award program, an internal peer review to select the nominee
will be managed through the Provost's Office.
Required materials for internal review:
1. JHU Internal Submission Cover Sheet (contact graceb@jhu.edu
for a copy)
2. Brief research plan (2-3 pages, not including figures and references)
3. Curriculum Vitae (2-4 pages, listing all funding sources)
4. A letter of recommendation from the candidate's department head
Interested candidates should submit a complete packet of materials for
internal review no later than 5 p.m. on Monday, September 1, 2008
via email, to graceb@jhu.edu. Doing
so ensures that an internal selection can be completed in a timely fashion
and the final nomination can be submitted to Microsoft by the November
3, 2008 deadline. If you have any questions, please contact Grace Bigelow

Burroughs Wellcome Fund (BWF) Investigators
in Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease Program for 2009
RESPONSE NEEDED BY: Monday, September 15, 2008
The BWF Investigators in Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease Program
provides funding opportunities to assistant professors who are accomplished
investigators studying pathogenesis of infectious diseases using multidisciplinary
approaches at the most "fundamental level-the points where human
and microbial systems interconnect." BWF is particularly interested
in research "on the host and host-pathogen studies, originating
in viral, bacterial, fungal, or parasite systems." Studies in this
area may have their foundations in the pathogen, but the primary focus
should involve the effects on the host at the cellular and/or systemic
levels. NOTE: This year BWF has increased the award to $500,000 over
a five year period. Candidates must have an MD, DVM, or PHD and
be in tenure-tracked as an assistant professor or equivalent. Full program
information can be obtained on the BWF website located at: http://www.bwfund.org/
programs/infectious_disease/pathogenesis_background.html
Johns Hopkins has been invited to submit two nominations (three, if
one nominee holds a DVM or is conducting research in pathogenic helminths,
mycology, or reproductive science). An internal peer review to select
the nominees will be managed through the Provost's Office.
Required materials for internal review:
1. JHU Internal Submission Cover Sheet (contact graceb@jhu.edu
for a copy)
2. Research plan (4-5 pages, not including figures and references)
3. Curriculum Vitae (2-4 pages)
4. A letter of recommendation from the candidate's department head
Interested candidates should submit a complete packet of materials for
internal review no later than 5 p.m. on Monday, September 15, 2008
via email, to graceb@jhu.edu. This
ensures that an internal selection can be completed in a timely fashion
and the final nomination submitted to the Burroughs Wellcome Fund by
the Wednesday, November 3, 2008 deadline. If you have any questions,
please contact Grace Bigelow (graceb@jhu.edu).
