New MTA Officer to Start at LTD --The Best News LTD Has Had in a While! The Licensing and Technology Development office welcomes Julia M. Brill,
Esq. as its new Copyright and Material Transfer Officer. Ms. Brill will
join LTD on August 2nd and brings over 20 years of transactional experience
reviewing, drafting, and negotiating multiple contracts. Previously,
Ms. Brill has served as the Corporate Contract and Materials Transfer
Officer at the University of Maryland - Baltimore in addition to serving
as a sole practitioner and a senior attorney for the Johns Hopkins Health
System. Her arrival is welcomed especially by the Licensing Associates who
have been working hard to fill the void to get these Agreements done
in a timely manner on top of handling new disclosures, protecting the
University's intellectual property, and negotiating License Agreements.
JHU executes approximately 1,800 MTAs per year so this is no small feat!
On the surface these Agreements may seem small and easy, but in reality
some are very difficult as future encumbrance issues need to be contemplated
and mitigated. The last thing a recipient investigator wants is to have
their intellectual property encumbered un-necessarily and not be able
to fully participate in the benefits relating to tech transfer of their
own hard work. MTAs are small but they can pack a punch! To read additional articles on encumbrances see: Research Web Notes
September 2003 and June 2004.
