HIPAA Course When the HIPAA Privacy Rule went into effect in 2003, Johns Hopkins Medicine required all researchers and study team members to complete two HIPAA courses: "General Privacy Issues" and "Privacy Issues Relating to Research (IRR)." Since then, federal agencies have issued further guidance interpreting aspects of the Privacy Rule that affect research, and another HIPAA regulation, the Security Rule, has become effective. As a result, a new, updated HIPAA course called "HIPAA and Research" is replacing the IRR course. Starting Sept. 28, the IRR course will no longer be available, and Hopkins Medicine researchers and study team members who have not taken it will be required to take the new "HIPAA and Research" course. If you took the IRR course and you would like to refresh your knowledge, you are welcome to review the course materials. The new course is available on the Hopkins interactive
server at: http://www.jhminteractive.com/INT/.
The General Privacy Issues course is a prerequisite to the HIPAA and Research
course and is available online at https://secure.lwservers. Any new Hopkins-affiliated investigator or study team member listed on a protocol submitted to the Hopkins Medicine IRB must have completed the following courses:
For more information, see the "HIPAA & Research" and "Research Training Requirements" links on the Hopkins Medicine IRB home page (http://irb.jhmi.edu/).
