New Vice Dean for Clinical Investigation Daniel E. Ford, M.D., M.P.H. has been named as the new Vice Dean for Clinical Investigation. Dan is uniquely qualified to oversee the clinical research enterprise at Hopkins. Hes a pioneer in patient-oriented research associated with the interrelationships between mental disorders, particularly depression, and chronic medical conditions. He made an international name for his work in such groundbreaking clinical studies as documenting depression as an independent risk factor in developing coronary heart disease and describing the long term health risks related to sleep disturbances. Dan was recently selected by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to direct the evaluation of its $12 million Depression in Primary Care Initiative. And he is one of a handful of generalists who have served on National Institute of Mental Health clinical review groups. Additionally, Dan has been the Principal Investigator for 12 years of a training grant to develop researchers in general internal medicine and has been a leader in using the Internet for clinical research. He understands the concerns of our clinical researchers and is committed to resolving them. Recently, for example, he helped to develop the electronic IRB submission process. We are extremely fortunate to have someone
of Dan Fords caliber to fill the shoes of Mike Klag, who developed
the role of Vice Dean for Clinical Investigation before being honored
with the appointment as Dean of the Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Drs. Ford and Klag have been working closely together during the transition
period to make sure that there is a smooth transfer of administrative
duties.
As a result of the accreditation, multiple changes were required throughout our process of research oversight and administration. The changes affect our policies, guidance documents and forms. On August 15th we posted approved Organization Policies, revised guidance documents and revised forms. Please check the "Notices and Updates" page to review new guidance postings. The new forms have been revised and marked on the IRB forms page. If you have questions or concerns, please let us know (jhmirb@jhmi.edu). Thank you for your support and cooperation as we implement these changes.
The next Course on Research Ethics (C.O.R.E) will be offered on October 17th, 2005. Faculty who participate in clinical research must complete C.O.R.E. or its equivalent by June 30, 2006. Fellows who participate in clinical research must complete C.O.R.E. training before completing their fellowship. In addition, completion of both the morning and afternoon sessions of C.O.R.E. fulfills Kirschstein-NRSA responsible conduct of research training requirements. Registration for CORE is handled by the Office of
Continuing Medical Education (CME). Registrations must be received 10
days prior to the course. To register, please visit CME's C.O.R.E. webpage
at: http://www.hopkinscme.net/etrakwebapp/ For additional information regarding the School
of Medicine Research Compliance Training requirements, please visit: http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/Research/
