New IRB Review Procedures
There are
some new procedures related to JHM IRB review, effective August
1, 2003.
As many of you know, Dr. Hayden Braine stepped
down as chair of JHM IRB 4 on July 1, 2003. After examining the
workload of the IRBs, we have decided to disband IRB 4 in August.
The workload from IRB 4 will be distributed among IRBs 1, 2, 3
and 5. New oncology members have been recruited for IRBs 1 and
5 to allow an equitable distribution of the existing studies that
have been previously reviewed by IRB 4. PIs of protocols that
have been reviewed by IRB 4 can continue to address correspondence
to IRB 4 until they receive notice of reassignment.
In addition, a new IRB will be constituted
in September 2003. This new IRB will be responsible for review
of new applications that qualify for an expedited review process
and for exemption requests. The new JHM IRB will be entitled IRB-X.
It will be chaired by Laura Rocco, R.N., M.S., Research Associate
in Clinical Pharmacology. Ms. Rocco has been a long-standing member
of the JHM IRBs, is exceptionally knowledgeable about good clinical
practices, and is eminently qualified to serve as chair of this
new committee. Membership for IRB-X will be finalized by the end
of August, and the membership list will be posted on the IRB web
site.
As we work to improve the IRB research review
process, we will be sure to keep you in the loop. Thank you for
your understanding and patience.
Office of Human Subjects Research (OHRS) is Moving
In September, the JHM IRB East Baltimore
office will be moving from the Turner Building to Reed Hall. The
Reed Hall space is a vast improvement over the current crowded conditions
in the Turner offices and will help us serve you better.
To allow IRB staff sufficient time to prepare
for and complete the move, we are canceling all JHM IRB meetings
during the weeks of August 11-15 and September 8-12. In addition,
the JHM IRB offices will be closed from September 5-9 for the
actual move. We need to close the offices to allow time for the
files to be relocated to Reed Hall, and for computers and phones
to be installed.
If you are planning to submit an application
or amendment to the JHM IRB within the next two months, please
try to allow a couple of extra weeks for processing--in other
words, submit it sooner rather than later. The IRB staff is working
hard to make this a smooth transition and we appreciate your assistance
as we make this move.
We will keep you posted on additional
details about the move. Once again, thanks for your understanding
and patience.
