New NIH Public Access Policy and YOUR Responsibility as an NIH Grant Recipient

NIH has issued a new Public Access Policy regarding access to published papers via PubMED Central within 12 months of publication. This policy pertains to work funded by NIH and may be viewed here: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/partners/0108Nexus.htm#

For free access journals (for example: PLoS journals, Journal of Clinical Investigation, or PNAS; the list of these journals is found at http://publicaccess.nih.gov/submit_
process_journals.htm), your publication will be uploaded automatically by the journal, but you must verify that they have done so. You will be notified by PubMED Central that the publisher has uploaded your publication, with an embargoed time after the original publication, before it is posted on PubMED Central.

If you are publishing in a non-free access journal (for example: Science, Nature, NEJM), you need to enter the following URL: http://publicaccess.nih.gov/submit_process_
journals.htm . Follow the link "Submission Process" to: http://publicaccess.nih.gov/
submit_process.htm, where you will find explicit instructions on how to upload your manuscript. The PubMED Central staff will contact you after your upload to process the manuscript. You will have the final approval of the content, and may set the timeline for public release in accordance to the journal's policy.
