JHMCIS Develops New Clinical Research Support System

Developers in the Johns Hopkins Medicine Center for Information Services (JHMCIS) are hard at work creating a new system to support clinical research within JHM. Called The Clinical Event Notification System (CENOTS), this system assists researchers and research coordinators by detecting medical ‘events’ at JHH and BMC (patient visits, lab and radiology results, medications ordered, etc.) for patients who are subjects of a registered research project. The system then notifies specified research staff (via email) of these events and provides a web-based user interface for viewing, acknowledging, and downloading the information.

For administrators/investigators busy with the tasks of managing clinical research Projects, the CENOTS makes life a little bit easier in the following ways:

  • It can notify you of important medical events for patients in your study. Notification can be immediate or daily.
  • The events detected can be as specific as a lab test with a specific value, or as general as any hospital visit.
  • It allows research staff to download the event detail data in an Excel-compatible format.

The CENOTS has moved into its ‘pilot expansion’ mode. We are looking for additional research studies to configure and looking for feedback to help us direct our future development efforts. If this system sounds like it would be beneficial to you, please contact Ken Harkness (kbh@jhmi.edu) or Bill Gary (wgary@jhmi.edu).

Electronic Proposals Under Grants

GovIn response to the NIH announcement regarding Grants.Gov, the University, in partnership with Hopkins One, has accelerated the implementation of the Proposal Development system (Coeus) which was selected to interface with SAP. The University has already registered with Grants.gov and it is not necessary to download the PureEdge product. Further communication will be forthcoming from the various Research Administration Offices. We anticipate rolling out Coeus for Faculty and Departmental use in July 2006. In the interim, alternative plans are being formulated.
