Finanacial Administrative Training Program Offers New Sponsored Projects e-Courses

The Financial Administrative Training Program now offers two new e-Courses in its “Workshop 2” program: Introduction to Sponsored Projects, and Budget Development for Sponsored Projects. The courses in these workshops are designed to allow Hopkins employees to obtain the knowledge and skills that are essential in performing financial administrative processes.

NIH-NCRR High-End Instrumentation Grant Program

The announcement and guidelines for the FY 2005 NIH National Center for Research Resources High-End Instrumentation (“HEI”) Grant Program are available at the following link: http://grants1.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-05-124.html. A letter of intent is due by August 15, 2005. Please note that the application deadline is Tuesday, September 20, 2005 (the application must be RECEIVED, not postmarked, by this date). Applications are limited to instruments that are to be used for biomedical research that cost at least $750,000 per instrument or integrated instrument system. The maximum award under the program is $2,000,000. If the equipment requested exceeds this amount, the application must include the commitment of resources for the amount in excess of $2,000,000. Instruments in this category include, but are not limited to, structural and functional imaging systems, macromolecular NMR spectrometers, high-resolution mass spectrometers, cryoelectron microscopes and supercomputers. The need must be clearly and adequately justified.

There is no limit on the number of applications JHU can submit provided that each application is for a different type of equipment. Applications must include an inventory of similar instruments owned by JHU, “neighboring research institutions, or otherwise accessible” with a description of why they are unavailable or inappropriate for the research proposed. For new generation instruments, the design concept, rationale and development methods must be included with sufficient detail for evaluation of technical feasibility. The Principal Investigator must be able to assume administrative/scientific oversight responsibility.

Please advise Gayle Mowbray Walters (mailto:gmwalters@jhmi.edu) in the Office of Research Administration of your interest in applying, including the type of equipment, for this program no later than Friday, August 5, 2005, so that we can determine if more than one group wants to apply for the same type of equipment. Installation, alterations, renovations, and operating costs must be supported by departmental funds existing at the time of proposal. If more than one division of the University wishes to apply for the same kind of instrumentation, an internal decision will need to be made by the Vice Provost for Research as to which application will be submitted. Letters of intent will be submitted through the appropriate ORA office.
