Funding from Foundations/Private Sources

JHU's Corporate and Foundation Relations maintains a Web site listing upcoming grant competitions that are sponsored by foundations and other private sources: http://jhuresearch.jhu.edu/OCFR.htm. They are in addition to the limited-submission RFPs periodically announced by the Research Projects Administration office. The opportunities are listed in order of deadline and links to each funder's application information are provided. Contact Karin Hunt (karinmhunt@jhu.edu) with any questions.

2014 NIH Director's Early Independence Awards

INTERNAL DEADLINE: October 15, 2013

The NIH Director's Early Independence Awards is a funding opportunity for outstanding young scientists to begin an independent research career immediately following the completion of their graduate studies. It is an excellent opportunity for research intensive institutions like Johns Hopkins to energize their research departments by recruiting superior, early career scientists. At the time of application, the Early Independence PI must be within twelve months before or after completing their Ph.D. (or equivalent), or for clinicians within twelve months before or after completing their medical residency (or equivalent) training. Hopkins can also actively recruit eligible junior scientists to apply for support from this program. Subsequently, Johns Hopkins will be expected to provide significant support for these research scientists (please see http://jhuresearch.jhu.edu/NIH-Dir_2013-14_flyer.pdf for specific information). It is expected that the selected PI will be competitive for continued funding of her/his research program as well as for a permanent research position by the end of the award period. NIH will award up to $250,000 in direct costs each year for five years, plus applicable Facilities and Administrative (F&A) costs to be determined at the time of award. More specific information about this program can be found at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-RM-13-009.html.

Johns Hopkins can submit two proposals for this funding initiative. The proposal review will be managed under the auspices of the Office of the Vice Provost for Graduate and Postdoctoral Programs and Special Projects. PLEASE NOTE: There are significant requirements from NIH regarding the actual support and appointment of the selected nominees. Please carefully review the information contained here: http://jhuresearch.jhu.edu/NIH-Dir_2013-14_flyer.pdf. If you decide your division would like to participate in this funding initiative, forward a copy of the attached announcement to the appropriate personnel in your division.

The deadline to submit the preliminary applications for internal review is October 15, 2013. The selected candidates will need to submit their letters of intent to NIH by December 31, 2013. Full proposals must be submitted to NIH no later than 5 p.m. on January 31, 2014. If you have any questions, please contact malexander@jhu.edu.
