Funding from Foundations/Private Sources

JHU's Corporate and Foundation Relations maintains a Web site listing upcoming grant competitions that are sponsored by foundations and other private sources: http://jhuresearch.jhu.edu/OCFR.htm. They are in addition to the limited-submission RFPs periodically announced by the Research Projects Administration office. School of Medicine Clinician Scientist Award

The next deadline for School of Medicine Clinician Scientist Award applications is Monday, April 2, 2012, at 5:00 P.M. Please bring this notice to the attention of promising individuals within your departments and divisions. CSA Guidelines are available at http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/Research/ora/handbook/csaawards.html. The award provides up to $80,000 per year for a maximum of two years to support up to 75% of the applicant's salary and benefits. Call Michelle Linehan (955-8937) with any questions.


Department of Defense Ovarian Cancer Research Program Funding Opportunities

The Fiscal Year 2012 (FY12) Defense Appropriations Act provides $16 million (M) to the Department of Defense Ovarian Cancer Research Program (OCRP) to support innovative, high-impact ovarian cancer research. The OCRP is administered by the US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC) through the Office of Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).

FY12 OCRP program announcements and general application instructions for the following award mechanisms have been posted on Grants.gov website. Application deadlines begin in April, please refer to the specific Program Announcement for due dates.

  • Ovarian Cancer Academy Award - pre-application due April 17, 2012
  • Pilot Award - pre-application due April 9, 2012
  • Teal Innovator Award - pre-application due April 17, 2012
  • Synergistic Translational Leverage Award pre-application due April 17, 2012

All applications must conform to the program announcement and application instructions available for electronic downloading from the Grants.gov website. The application package containing the required forms for each award mechanism can be found on Grants.gov. A listing of all USAMRMC funding opportunities can be obtained on the Grants.gov website by performing a basic search using CFDA Number 12.420.

A pre-application is required and must be submitted through the CDMRP eReceipt website (http://cdmrp.org) prior to the pre-application deadline. Applications must be submitted through the federal government's single-entry portal, Grants.gov.


Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program Funding Opportunities
The Fiscal Year 2012 (FY12) Defense Appropriations Act provides $120 million (M) to the Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program (BCRP) to support innovative, high-impact breast cancer research. The BCRP is administered by the US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC) through the Office of Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP).

The following award opportunities are now available:

  • Era of Hope Scholar Award
  • Idea Award
  • Impact Award
  • Innovator Award
  • Postdoctoral Fellowship Award
  • Transformative Vision Award

Edward Mallinckrodt, Jr. Foundation Award Program

INTERNAL SUBMISSION DEADLINE: Monday, June 29, 2012

The Edward Mallinckrodt Jr. Foundation provides awards two times a year to support early-stage, highly promising investigators engaged in basic or clinical research that has the potential to advance the understanding, diagnosis or treatment of disease. Awards are made in the amount of $60K per year for up to three years. This foundation will not provide funding beyond the initial three-year period. No international projects are considered.

Johns Hopkins University is permitted to submit two nominations from the School of Medicine for this program. The deadline to submit preliminary applications for internal review is 5 p.m. on Friday, June 29, 2012. Interested applicants should submit their internal application materials to kjustice@jhmi.edu. Please submit the documents saved as one PDF in the following sequence:

  1. JHU Limited submission cover sheet (contact kjustice@jhmi.edu for a copy).
  2. Curriculum vitae, including current external research support and publications.
  3. Proposal with a detailed description of the research project (no more than five pages, single- or double--spaced). Also include references (in addition to the five-page proposal) that support the proposal.
  4. One- to two-page lay summary.
  5. Letter from the department chair that describes the candidate's qualifications and the potential impact of his/her work.
  6. Budget outlining how the awarded funds will be utilized (one-page maximum). Budget must also detail the levels of support of any grants already available or pending.

NOTE: This foundation does not fund overhead.

Each applicant should expect to receive a confirmation of receipt of his/her materials within 48 hours. Completed applications must be received by the Mallinckrodt Foundation via e-mail no later than August 1, 2012.
