FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES- Back

New JHU Web Site Features Private Funding Opportunities

Medical faculty can now find current funding opportunities from foundations and other private sources at a new Web site provided by JHU's Corporate and Foundations Relations. The online resource is a quick and easy reference for faculty, listing selected competitions in order of deadline, with links to each funder's application information. Current medical-related RFPs listed on the site - including funding opportunities relevant to both clinical and basic science research - range from HIV/AIDS research fellowships to childhood obesity prevention to patient safety research. These competitions are in addition to the limited-submission RFPs periodically announced by the university's Research Administration office. Please bookmark the Selected Grant Competitions site at http://jhuresearch.jhu.edu/OCFR.htm as it is updated frequently.

FY09 DOD Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program

The Fiscal Year 2009 (FY09) Defense Appropriations Act provides $16 million to the Department of Defense Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program (PRCRP) to support innovative research to eradicate cancers not addressed by the Breast Cancer Research Program, the Prostate Cancer Research Program, or the Ovarian Cancer Research Program. This program is administered by the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command through the Office of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP). Detailed descriptions of each of the funding mechanisms, evaluation criteria, and submission requirements can be found in the FY09 PRCRP Program Announcements. Each Program Announcement is available electronically for downloading from the Grants.gov website (http://www.grants.gov), the CDMRP website (http://cdmrp.army.mil/funding/prcrp.htm) and the CDMRP eReceipt Website (https://cdmrp.org).

Pew Scholars Program in the Biomedical Sciences

Internal deadline: Friday, July 31, 2009

The Pew Scholars Program in the Biomedical Sciences supports young investigators of outstanding promise in the basic and clinical sciences related to the advancement of human health. The Pew Charitable Trusts especially encourages researchers to pursue creative, innovative, and risk-taking approaches, and gives considerable weight to the candidate's history as an independent investigator and to significant published work.

The program award of $60K each year for a period of four years may be used for personnel, equipment, supplies, or travel. But no more than $10K a year may be used for the Scholar's salary, including fringe benefits. Overhead is limited to 8% of the total award. Note: Pew Scholars cannot concurrently be supported by similar private foundation awards in excess of $50K a year for the first two years of the Pew program. Funding from the NIH and other government sources and grants from non-profit associations do not pose a conflict.

Johns Hopkins University can nominate one (1) candidate for this award. Applicants must hold a doctorate in medicine, other health-related professions, or biomedical sciences and must possess a full-time appointment at the rank of assistant professor or equivalent. By July 1, 2010, the candidate cannot have been in such an appointment for more than three years. (Time spent at more than one institution and in clinical internships, residencies, or work toward board certification does not count.) Previous candidates who have not been selected may apply for this year's award providing they meet current criteria. All applicants must be initially nominated by Johns Hopkins before they can proceed with the final application. For further general information about the program, please consult: http://www.pewtrusts.org/our_work_category.aspx?id=194.
