NIH Seeks Proposals for 2009 Director's Pioneer and New Innovator Awards NIH welcomes proposals for 2009 NIH Director's
Pioneer Awards and New Innovator Awards. Both programs are
part of the NIH Roadmap
for Medical Research and support exceptionally creative scientists
who take highly innovative, potentially high-impact approaches to major
challenges in biomedical or behavioral research. Pioneer Awards provide up to $2.5 million
in direct costs over 5 years and are open to scientists at any career
stage. New Innovator Awards provide up to $1.5 million in direct
costs over the same period and are for early career investigators who
have not received an NIH regular research (R01) or similar NIH grant.
Starting this year, both the Pioneer Award and the New Innovator Award
competitions will begin with a pre-application phase: The Pioneer Award competition begins with a proposal
submission period from November 17 to December 17, 2008. See Pre-Application
for the 2009 NIH Director's Pioneer Award Program (X02) (PAR-09-012)
for instructions and http://nihroadmap.nih.gov/pioneer
for more information. Send questions to pioneer@nih.gov. The New Innovator Award competition begins with
a proposal submission period from December 15, 2008 to January 15,
2009. See Pre-Application for the 2009 NIH Director's New Innovator
Award Program (X02) (PAR-09-013) for instructions and http://nihroadmap.nih.gov/newinnovator
for more information. Send questions to newinnovator@nih.gov.
The NIH's new Transformative R01 Program (T-R01s)
will allow highly creative, "out-of-the-box" projects to be
supported. The T-R01 Program represents a High Risk/High Reward Demonstration
Project in which novel approaches to peer review and program management
are to be piloted. The application submission period is from December
29, 2008 to January 29, 2009. See http://nihroadmap.nih.gov/T-R01/
for more information. Send questions to T_R01@mail.nih.gov.
The BCRP challenges the scientific community to
design innovative research that will foster new directions for, address
neglected issues in, and bring new investigators to the field of breast
cancer research. The BCRP focuses its funding on innovative projects that
have the potential to make a significant impact on breast cancer, particularly
those involving multidisciplinary and/or multi-institutional collaborations
and alliances. The BCRP encourages risk-taking research; however, all
projects must demonstrate solid judgment and rationale. The Concept Award
supports the exploration of a highly innovative new concept or untested
theory that addresses an important problem relevant to breast cancer.
The Concept Award is not intended to support a logical progression of
an already established research project but, instead, supports high-risk
studies that have the potential to reveal entirely new avenues for investigation.
Presentation of preliminary data is not allowed.
However, a rationale for the work must be provided. This program announcement and the required forms
are available for downloading from Grants.gov: http://apply.grants.gov/apply/GetGrantFromFedgrants?cfda= Concept Award deadlines:
The Postdoctoral Award enables recent medical or
other doctoral degree graduates to obtain the necessary experience to
pursue an independent career in breast cancer research. Candidates for
this award should exhibit a strong desire to pursue a career in breast
cancer research. This program announcement and the required forms
are available for downloading from Grants.gov: http://apply.grants.gov/apply/GetGrantFromFedgrants?cfda= Postdoctoral Award deadlines:
DEADLINE: Monday, January 5, 2009 Funding is available to support multidisciplinary research in prostate cancer through the Patrick C. Walsh Prostate Cancer Research Fund. The Maryland Stem Cell Commission has issued
three official Requests for Applications (RFAs) for funding through the
Maryland Stem Cell Research Fund under the Maryland Stem Cell Research
Act. The grants to be awarded under these three RFAs will fund basic and
translational research with human stem cells of all types, as defined
in the Stem Cell Act. The goals of this program are to broaden and advance
basic knowledge of human stem cell biology that will be relevant for eventual
development of clinical applications, and to enable, support and accelerate
such clinical applications for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of
human diseases and conditions. The Commission is seeking the widest range
of research topics that may contribute to achievement of these goals.
A one-page Letter of Intent is required and must be submitted by November
14, 2008. Applications for funding under these RFAs will be due January
15, 2009. To read about the three RFAs in detail, click here: http://www.mscrf.org/content/fundingopps/index.cfm Questions by applicants about these RFAs may only be addressed by email, through the following contact: mscrfinfo@MarylandTEDCO.org.
Deadline: December 9, 2008 The Jahnigen Scholars program offers two-year
career development awards to support junior faculty in following specialties:
anesthesiology, emergency medicine, general surgery, gynecology, ophthalmology,
orthopaedic surgery, otolaryngology, physical medicine and rehabilitation,
thoracic surgery, and urology. The award is intended to allow individuals
to initiate and ultimately sustain a career in research and education
in the geriatrics aspects of their discipline. The Jahnigen Award addresses
the urgent need to create a structure for developing leaders in geriatrics
in academic surgery and related medical specialties. In time, it is hoped
that this group of committed Jahnigen faculty will lead an advance in
the way each discipline cares for older patients by improving the knowledge
base, educational activities and clinical care and by participating in
efforts to increase understanding of the geriatric aspects of their specialties
on the national and local level. Each grant will provide two-year support
of $75,000 per year for salary and fringe benefits and/or the costs of
doing research. For complete details and application instructions, click
