NSF - Major Research Instrumentation Program (MRI) Program - 2008

RESPONSE NEEDED BY Wednesday, November 14, 2007

The National Science Foundation invites applications in response to the Major Research Instrumentation Program (MRI) Program Solicitation, which states, "The Major Research Instrumentation Program (MRI) is designed to increase access to scientific and engineering equipment for research and research training in our Nation's organizations of higher education, research museums and non-profit research organizations. This program seeks to improve the quality and expand the scope of research and research training in science and engineering, and to foster the integration of research and education by providing instrumentation for research-intensive learning environments. The MRI program encourages the development and acquisition of research instrumentation for shared inter- and/or intra-organizational use and in concert with private sector partners. The MRI program assists in the acquisition or development of major research instrumentation by organizations that is, in general, too costly for support through other NSF programs. Proposals may be for a single instrument, a large system of instruments, or multiple instruments that share a common or specific research focus."

Full program details can be found on the NSF website at: http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2007/
nsf07510 /nsf07510.htm
.

Because of the limits on the number of proposals that can be submitted, an internal peer review to select the nominees will be managed through the Provost's Office.

Required Materials:

  1. JHU Cover Sheet (email Graceb@jhu.edu for a copy)
  2. Project Summary (3-4 pages)
  3. Principal Investigator's Curriculum Vitae (2-4 pages)& the names of all other investigators
  4. One page anticipated budget
  5. A letter of recommendation from the candidate's department head

Interested candidates should submit a complete packet of materials for internal review no later than 5 p.m. on Wednesday, November 14, 2007, via email, to graceb@jhu.edu. This ensures that the internal selection can be completed in a timely fashion and the final proposal can be submitted to NSF by the January 24, 2008 deadline.

Maryland Stem Cell Research Fund Requests for Applications

The Maryland Stem Cell Commission has issued requests for applications to two grant programs. The grants to be awarded under these two RFAs will fund basic and translational research with human stem cells of all types, as defined in the Maryland Stem Cell Research Act. The goals of this program are to broaden and advance basic knowledge of human stem cell biology that will be relevant for eventual development of clinical applications, and to enable, support and accelerate such clinical applications for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of human diseases and conditions. The Commission is seeking the widest range of research topics that may contribute to achievement of these goals. Applications for funding under these RFAs will be due Jan. 15, 2008. A Letter of Intent is now required and must be submitted by November 15, 2007.

The first RFA solicits applications for Investigator-Initiated Research Grants, which are designed for investigators with preliminary data supporting the grant application. These Investigator-Initiated Research Grants will be for up to $500,000 of direct costs per year, for up to three years.

The second RFA is for Exploratory Research Grants, which are designed for investigators who are new to the stem cell field (young investigators and investigators from other fields), and for new hypotheses, approaches, mechanisms or models that may differ from current thinking in the stem cell field, without any preliminary data supporting the application. These Exploratory Research Grants will be for up to $100,000 of direct costs per year, for up to two years.

Jahnigen Career Development Scholars Awards program offers two-year career development awards to support junior faculty in the specialties of anesthesiology, emergency medicine, general surgery, gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopaedic surgery, otolaryngology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, thoracic surgery, and urology. The award is intended to allow individuals to initiate and ultimately sustain a career in research and education in the geriatrics aspects of his/her discipline.

To be eligible, a candidate must be a physician who is a U.S. citizen or permanent resident; be certified or board eligible to practice in one of the program's targeted specialties; have a primary academic appointment in a U.S. institution in one of the targeted specialty departments; and have completed his/her training (residency and/or fellowship) on or after June 30, 1998.

Each grant will provide two-year support of $75,000 per year for salary and fringe benefits and/or the costs of doing research. Each scholar's institution must provide a minimum match of $25,000 per year. Up to ten awards will be given in 2008. The Jahnigen Award may not be used to support indirect costs.

Nominations for the Dennis W. Jahnigen Career Development Scholars Program are to be made by the individual's department chair in any one of the targeted specialties. Departments may each submit one application. Institutions may submit more than one application.

Program information and application procedures, as well as the brochure and application request form, are available at the American Geriatrics Society Web site (http://www.americangeriatrics.org).

American Geriatrics Society Seeks Applications for Geriatrics Education for Specialty Residents Program

Deadline: March 2, 2008

The American Geriatrics Society (http://www.americangeriatrics.org/), with funding from the John A. Hartford Foundation (http://www.jhartfound.org/), established the Geriatrics for Specialists Project (http://americangeriatrics.org/specialists/) to increase geriatrics expertise in surgical and related medical specialties.

The Geriatrics Education for Specialty Residents Program, a key component of the project, is designed to improve the amount and quality of geriatric education received by medical and surgical residents. The program provides small grant support to bring geriatrics expertise into residency programs. Through support for specialty-specific initiatives, interested specialists work in collaboration with the geriatrics program in their institution to develop, initiate, and evaluate programs designed to increase education for residents in the geriatrics aspect of the following disciplines: anesthesiology, emergency medicine, general surgery, gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopaedic surgery, otolaryngology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, thoracic surgery, and
urology.

The proposal should be submitted by a member of the department in the specialty as PI with the partner geriatrician listed as Co-PI. For those institutions that do not have a geriatrician on staff, the specialty PI may request a geriatrics mentor to participate as Co-PI.

Up to twenty-five two-year grants of $20,000 per year will be awarded. Program information and application procedures, as well as the brochure and application request form, are available at the American Geriatrics Society Web site (http://www.americangeriatrics.org).
