Funding for Prostate Cancer Research

Funding is available to support multidisciplinary research in prostate cancer through the Patrick C. Walsh Prostate Cancer Research Fund. Awards of a maximum of $75,000 for up to 2 years are available to fund career development and developmental research programs (pilot projects). New Ideas Encouraged!

Susan G. Komen for the Cure Announces New Funding Opportunities to Accelerate Breast Cancer Research

Susan G. Komen for the Cure (http://www.komen.org/) has announced the introduction of new types of research grant awards and the deployment of an upgraded online grants application process.

Komen's four new types of grant awards focus on speeding the translation, or practical application of research discoveries, for the benefit of breast cancer patients. They also share the goal of helping to reduce the number of cases of breast cancer that develop as well as the number of people who die from the disease. Each funding opportunity requires submission of a pre-application prior to submission of a full application.

1) Promise Grants provide up to $1.5 million annually over five years for integrated research programs that bring together laboratory and clinical investigators from different disciplines to work together to solve common causes of breast cancer mortality. (Pre-application deadline: October 23, 2007; full application deadline: December 4, 2007.)

2) Investigator Initiated Research Grants provide up to $600,000 over three years to stimulate exploration of new ideas and novelapproaches in breast cancer research and clinical practice that will lead to reductions in breast cancer incidence and mortality within the next decade. (Pre-application deadline: October 9, 2007; full application deadline: November 8, 2007.)

3) Career Catalyst Research Grants provide unique opportunities for scientists in the early stages of their career to achieveresearch independence with an independent award of up to $450,000 over three years. CCR investigators lead a research project addressing an important question in breast cancer research and complete a self-defined career development plan with support from a mentor committee. (Pre-application deadline: October 9, 2007; full application deadline: November 8, 2007.)

4) Postdoctoral Fellowships seek to attract pre-faculty scientists into breast cancer by providing up to $60,000 annually over three years. Fellows develop skills and expertise in one of two research tracks, basic and translational research leading to reductions in breast cancer incidence and mortality. (Pre-application deadline: October 4, 2007; full application deadline: October 16, 2007.)

Brookdale Foundation Leadership in Aging Fellowship Program for 2008

The Brookdale Foundation has announced a new Leadership in Aging Fellowship Program to encourage emerging leaders in the field of aging.

The fellowship offers support for junior faculty focusing on an area of aging research and are within 10 years of receiving their M.D. or Ph.D. The foundation will consider projects from a broad range of disciplines, including, but not limited to, medical, biological and basic sciences, nursing, social sciences, and arts and humanities. The fellowship will be up to $125,000 per year for two years.

While there is no limit to the number of applications that can be submitted by an institution, the foundation requests that an internal review panel endorse all candidates. Therefore, an internal review to endorse candidates will be managed through the Provost's Office.

Required materials for internal review:
1.JHU Internal Submission Cover Sheet (email graceb@jhu.edu for a copy)
2. Brief research plan (1-2 pages, not including figures and references)
3. Curriculum Vitae (2-3 pages)
4. A letter that supports and endorses the project from the candidate's department chair/director

Interested candidates should submit a complete packet of materials for internal review no later than 5 p.m. Monday, October 8, 2007, to graceb@jhu.edu. This ensures that the internal endorsement process can be completed in a timely fashion and the proposals can be submitted to the Brookdale Foundation by the November 1, 2007 deadline.
