Sol Goldman Pancreatic Cancer Research Center Grants

The Sol Goldman Pancreatic Cancer Research Center at Johns Hopkins (http://pathology2.jhu.edu/pancreas/goldmancenter/index.cfm) is pleased to announce the availability of pilot project grants for research on adenocarcinoma of the pancreas. Applications are due August 31, 2007. This program funds important new pilot projects with promising translational potential that do not have sufficient data for an independently funded NIH grant. Projects of high priority should focus on new research directions, explore innovative ideas, test unconventional, but potentially important, new hypotheses, or ascertain the feasibility of new research approaches. For more information on how to submit an application visit: http://pilotprojects.onc.jhmi.edu.

NIH RFA-NR-08-001 NINR Nursing Science Research on Interventions in Chronic Illness (P01)

RESPONSE NEEDED BY Friday, August 31, 2007

This program project mechanism is designed to support research in which the funding of several interdependent, but conceptually related or synergistic projects offers significant scientific advantages over support of these same projects as individual regular research grants (e.g., R01s).

These projects will bring together scientists from diverse fields, who would not otherwise collaborate, and apply interdisciplinary methods to an important well-defined problem. The collaborators will be required to describe how the program is more effective as a whole, not as a series of independent projects. Applicants should consider attracting the resources and expertise of nearby or available Clinical and Translational Science Award grant sites (CTSAs) and/or federally funded research centers.

Applicants are encouraged to contact the NINR Extramural staff listed at the end of the announcement about the areas appropriate for program project grants. The complete RFA is available at the NIH website located at: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-NR-08-001.html.

NIH will allow Hopkins to submit one proposal for this program.

Required Materials:

1. JHU Cover Sheet (email graceb@jhu.edu for the document)
2. Project Summary (3-4 pages)
3. Principal Investigator's Biosketch (2-4 pages)
4. The names of all project leaders
5. One page anticipated budget
6. A letter of recommendation from the candidate's department head

Interested candidates should submit materials no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, August 31, 2007, via email, to graceb@jhu.edu. This ensures that should an internal selection be required it can be completed in a timely fashion and a Letter of Intent can be submitted to NIH by the October 29, 2007 deadline.

If you have any questions, please contact Grace Bigelow (graceb@jhu.edu) or visit our website at: http://jhuresearch.jhu.edu/funding.htm#jhu-coordinated.

Talecris Biotherapeutics' Talents Program Accepting
Applications for Research Grant Awards

Deadline: August 15, 2007 (Letters of Intent)

Talecris Biotherapeutics, Inc. (http://www.talecris.com/ ), a global biotherapeutic and -technology company, has announced that it is accepting applications for its 2007 Talents Research Awards. It will award grants of up to $150,000 per project.
The Talents, or Talecris New Trials Support program is designed to advance basic and clinical research addressing the use of intravenous immunoglobulin in antibody replacement as well as immune modulation therapies. Talents research grants provide a source of funding for research scientists investigating the cause and treatment of
immune disorders. Selection of proposals for funding will be based on scientific merit, quality of applicant and research environment, and consistency with the overall program goals.

In 2006, the program's inaugural year, Talents grants were made to seven investigators representing major universities, clinics, and institutions in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. The grants funded studies ranging from a multicenter
clinical registry to establish the efficacy of IGIV in patients with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) who do not meet normal diagnostic criteria to basic cellular mechanisms by which IGIV mediates immune response.
All information about the Talents program, including how to apply, is available on the Talents Web site. http://www.talecristalents.com/apply-how-to.htm.
