Burroughs Wellcome Clinical Scientist Awards in Translational Research

Internal Deadline: 6/20/07

The Burroughs Wellcome Fund (BWF) Clinical Scientist Awards in Translational Research provide $750,000 over a period of five years ($150,000 per year) to faculty at the Assistant or early Associate Professor level. The purpose of this research program is to develop and increase the productivity of established physician-scientists who bring new approaches to translational research and are mentoring the next generation of physician-scientists. For the purposes of this award, translational research includes studies which involve etiology, pathogenesis, and mechanisms of disease; clinical knowledge and improved diagnosis; and disease management, molecular epidemiology, and limited small-scale clinical trials that provide evidence for effectiveness of therapy.

The BWF will allow the School of Medicine to nominate up to FOUR (4) candidates to the program. Of these four candidates, the foundation requires that at least one candidate is female and one candidate is a member of the following minority groups: African American, Hispanic, or Native American. Each Department Chair may nominate ONE (1) candidate to the internal selection committee for consideration.

Nominations must include a letter from the Department chair, an NIH-style biosketch, a one-page abstract of the nominee's clinical research program, and the cover sheet located here: http://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/research/ora/funding/tools/BWF_Cover_Sheet.doc.
All nomination materials must be sent directly to Amanda Gibson (agibson8@jhmi.edu) in BRB Suite 117 no later than Wednesday, June 20th at 5:00PM. The internal selection will be completed as soon as possible so that the selected candidates have ample time to prepare applications for the August 15th deadline.

Additional details regarding this program are posted on the BWF website at: http://www.bwfund.org/programs/translational/clinical_scientists_main.html.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

These grants will provide support for innovative cancer research projects designed to accelerate the discovery and development of new agents to treat metastatic colon cancer and/or for pre-clinical research with direct therapeutic intent. Special emphasis will be placed on research that holds promise for leading to individualized therapeutic options for treatment in the near future or for developing promising new cancer therapeutics for metastatic colon cancer, which will translate into clinical applications within a one- to two-year period. Grants will be provided in an amount between $500,000 to $1,000,000. The AACR will award 3-5 grants in 2007.

For information about eligibility, the grant terms, and application instructions, please visit the AACR website ( http://www.aacr.org/home/scientists/travel-grants--research-funding/research-funding/littlefield-aacr-grants-for-metastatic-colon-cancer-research.aspx )or visit proposalCENTRAL ( https://v2.ramscompany.com/default.asp ) to access the online application.

Disruptive Innovations in Health and Health Care

Application Deadline: July 18, 2007

"Disruptive Innovations in Health and Health Care," an online, open source competition co-sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Changemakers, seeks to identify ways in which the health and health care marketplace can offer services, tools and choices that consumers want-but are currently out of reach because of cost, complexity, or because the right idea hasn't come along.

Innovators submit their ideas on the Changemakers web site and the Changemakers community provides feedback on the problem and proposed solutions. Twelve competition finalists will be selected by a distinguished panel of judges. The Changemakers community will then vote on the competition site for three winners, who each will receive a $5,000 award from Changemakers.

In addition, RWJF's Pioneer Portfolio will review competition entries and may award up to $5 million to support projects with potential for the greatest impact. Full details at http://www.rwjf.org/applications/solicited/cfp.jsp?ID=19853

Talecris Biotherapeutics' Talents Program Accepting
Applications for Research Grant Awards

Deadline: August 15, 2007 (Letters of Intent)

Talecris Biotherapeutics, Inc. ( http://www.talecris.com/ ), a global biotherapeutic and -technology company, has announced that it is accepting applications for its 2007 Talents Research Awards. It will award grants of up to $150,000 per project.

The Talents, or Talecris New Trials Support program is designed to advance basic and clinical research addressing the use of intravenous immunoglobulin in antibody replacement as well as immune modulation therapies. Talents research grants provide a source of funding for research scientists investigating the cause and treatment of
immune disorders. Selection of proposals for funding will be based on scientific merit, quality of applicant and research environment, and consistency with the overall program goals.

In 2006, the program's inaugural year, Talents grants were made to seven investigators representing major universities, clinics, and institutions in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. The grants funded studies ranging from a multicenter
clinical registry to establish the efficacy of IGIV in patients with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) who do not meet normal diagnostic criteria to basic cellular mechanisms by which IGIV mediates immune response.

All information about the Talents program, including how to apply, is available on the Talents Web site. http://www.talecristalents.com/apply-how-to.htm
